If Deputy District Clerk Joe
Sproat had come to Greer county
from Texas, and was » democrat.
the Star would have welcomed him
and taken him into full fellowship
at once, but he comes from another
county in the same judicial district
of Oklahoma with Greer and is a
republican, therefore the Star calls
him a • carpetbagger."
The question of the legal rights
of miners to prospect and operate
mines on school lands in the Wich-
ita mountains has been submitted
to Secretary Hitchcock by Governor
Ferguson. A test case is now
pending and Secretary Hitchcock
has an important question to de-
cide as thousands of acres of school
lands of Oklahoma are involved.
It appears to be easy enough to
get the people of Mangum to vote
bonds for public improvements but
hard to get the public improve-
ments started after the bonds are
voted. Mangum voted bonds for
a high school building and for
waterworks several months ago,
but there is no sign as yet of either
new school building or city water-
works.
The Mangum Star is ruling the
democratic party of Greer county
with a rod of iron, so to speak, but
not content with being absolute
dictator to its own party it now is
apparently aspiring to be chief ad-
viser and premier to the republican
party. The Star is becoming alto-
gether too ambitious and too much
ambition, like "a little learning, is
a dangerous thing." Do you re-
member Cardinal Woolsey's advice
to Cromwell? "Fling away ambi-
tion, by that sin fell the angels,
how can man then, the image of
his maker, hope to win by it.
Stay in your own back yard and
"don' git gay.''
While in Guthrie last week we
called on Secretary Morris of the
livestock sanitary board and inter-
viewed Mm on the fever tick situa-
tion in Greer county. He said the
only reports of fever ticks now in
Oklahoma came from Greer county.
He regretted to say that the people
of Greer county seem utterly in-
different on the important question
of fever ticks and said if they did
not get over it, and show a dispo-
sition to get rid of ticks, and stay
rid of them, he was fearful that
the federal government would place
Greer county below the quarantine
line. And if once she gets there
it will be hard to get back. He j
Mated that the board spends nearly
as ranch money fighting ticks in i
Greer county as in all the balance j

E. F. Schramm, of Newkirk,
was in Mangum Monday as the
special agent of the Oklahoma
World's Fair Commission, collect-
ing samples of minerals and build-
ing materials. He got samples of
both our natural building stone and
the artificial stone, also samples of
the shale of which it is proposed to
make pressed brick, and of the
building sand which so abundantly
abounds about Mangum and which
is used in making the manufactured
stone. He also got samples of salt
from Salton and samples of the va-
rious kinds of gypsum deposits.
He arranged also to have large pho-
tos made of the natural building
stone buildings and of buildings
made of the manufactured stone so
that the exhibit will show what
sort of buildings Mangum has and
what they are made of. Every
citizen of Greer county should re-
member not to let pass an oppor-
tunity to assist in the grand work
of getting up a good world's fair
exhibit for Oklahoma.
