it gets on my nerves to have a
little two>by-nothing call me a
socialist. There never was any
reason for anyone at any ti ma call-
ing me politically anything but a
democrat for I have always voted
that ticket straight, which is more
than can be truthfully said of any
other newspaper in the city.
Judge Jarrett Todd, the chair-
man of the County Democratic Cen-
tral Committee, in response to an
invitation from me to use the
columns of the Sun-Monitor in be-
half of democracy, has declared it
to be the official organ of that
party, and has so used it.
I don't mind a joke from a friend,
but to have a little upstart, em-
ployed part of his time by a mun-
grel newspaper, to call me a
"socialist" in an effort to draw me
down politically on a level with
himself is more than I will quietly
stand for. S. E. ECHOLS,

OVR WAR CLOUDS
I There seems to be considerable
apprehension on the part of some
! that we are »oon to become engaged
in war with Mexico and poasibly
'Japan, but to us it teems that we
. have reached the point in civilixa<
lion that we can and will settle the
matter without war. We have
great confidence in our President
land Mr. Pryan. It seems to tie
true that while they pray, they
keep their powder dry, but still we
believe the matters at variance be-
tween us can and will lie settled
outside of war.
From a Washington department
store comes the recital that the
president's daughters were there
looking at gowns recently, and
were informed that a charge of two
dollars was made for alterations:
whereupon one of them responded,
"Oh, we can make any necessary
alterations at home; we know how
to sew." The accomplishment is
one that should be possessed by
every woman in the land, and the
fact that it is taught in public
schools at the present time shows
that there is one respect at least in
which public school authorities re-
spond to the practical need of the
public.
