FRIDAY. JULY 28, 1905
I he Capital's Annexation Gold
Brick Scheme.
In the interest of annexation the
Capital ha* been telling the people of
McAlester how they would locate
(heir high school building well in th»*
north part of town so as to be con-
venient to this part of the city after
annexation. That there never was
any intention of doing any such thing
ia proved by the board purchasing for
tl2,0QQ a sit* for the proposed high
school only two blocks north of Choc
taw avenue. Very properly the
boomers of Mouth McAlester are for
their own Interests, and if for the ad
rancement of the same they can In
duce the people of McAlester to assist
them in closing the postofflce and de
pot here It will only show their supe-
riority in the matter of working for
self interests. Jealous of the success
of Hans H^uci park so close to the bus
Iness part of McAlester and mi far
away from Choctaw avenue the Capi-
tal is now advocating the establish-
ment of an amusement park in the
central south part of South McAlester
in opposition to Huh Houci park
Thia of Itself is all right, and, as in the
case of locating the high school build
ing, the Messenger has no complaint
lo make abont It except as to show
the hypocrisy and lnainc»rlty of the
Capital's argument for annexation to
help this part of the town as well ax
Choctaw avenue. McAlester, like a.,
other towns in this district, is largely
tributary to South McAlester anyway,
and to kill off these outside towns
and close up their postoffloes and de-
pota and abolish their municipal gov-
ernments Is a policy of swiveled local-
ism that would put a check on develop-
ment anil finally result disastrously to
Houtli McAlester. It Is like killing
the goose that laid the golden egg
These adjacent towns are for the most
part sales stations for South McAles-
ter wholesalers, besides pouring a rich
trade Into the lap of her retail Inter-
ests. The Capital evinces a very nar-
row and Intensely Jealous disposition
toward outside and tributary towns,
seemingly overlooking the fact that
in order for there ta be a prosper-
ous South McAlester there must be
some prosperity without from which
to draw prosperity. A town can
hardly live and prosper off of itself.
That is like trying to keep a cow by
feeding her nothing but the whay of
her own milk. The merchants of
South McAlester know these things
and have the good business sense to
understand the necessity of outside
prosperity and the need for local de-
pot, post office, school and trade con-
veniences for this outside and tribu-
tary population. If representing the
views and supposed interests of any-
body outside of the Capital office in

As the time approaches for the
Kusso-Japanese peace conference it
is interesting to note the contrast be-
tween the preliminary tactics of th«*
two powers. It is perhaps a compre-
hensive distinction to say that the |
Russian diplomatic methods are \
thoroughly Russian which means,
blustering, arrogant and misleading,
while the Japanese utterances are
characteristically quite, sauve and
simple in their directness. So far1
nothing has transpired to Justify the
belief that the Russians will be any
more successful at the diplomatic
t;ame than they have been on the
battlefield.

Annexation. IS
South McAI**ter VVjiHp.
if the McAlester people should be
foolish enough to allow their towq to
be annexed to South McAlester they
will find that they will lose their de- '
pot, postofHce and the greater por- r
tion of their country trade. Country
people will naturally go to a town that
has a poatoffice and a depot to sell
their stuff and do their trading, which
would cause Old Town to amount to
nothing more than No. 5 coal camp
Of course South McAlester would j
doubtless be big winner in gobbling
up old Town and securing the bulk of
the trade now going to that town;'
and in addition to this the people of
this city well know that if the two
towns consolidate all the biggest mer-
chants of Old Town will be forced to
move to South McAlester in self de-
fense. The above is the plain truth
of the matter, and if the people of
Old Town know on which side their
bread is buttered th will shun the
annexation scheme as they would an
Oklahoma cyclone, as it would ' fat-
ten them out" about as completely.

The seller of poi-Ujilers came Into
the office of the shrewd broker with
the air of one who is about to sacri-

pot-boilers looked upon the treasure
long and yearningly It could be seen
that a grievous struggle between art

"How much do you want for It?" de-
manded the shrewd broker "One hun-

"It's giving It away " "Give you three
