Awkward Ways Waste Energy.
From buttoning shoes to washing

This fact is one of several which v

have been made for the purpose of
determining th energy requirement.-

HAVE YOU URIC ACID TROUBLE?
Many Mangum People Are Learning
How to Avoid It.
You hear a great deal about uru.
acid trouble. , This is only a form of
kidney sickness. When weak, the kid-
neys pass off only a part of the uric
acid poison. The rest remains in the
body to irritate the nerves and disturb
the organs. Uric acid may cause heart
trouble, headache, bad digestion, rheu-
matism, neuralgia, gout, dropsy and
gravel. Doan's Kidney Pills are espec-
ially prepared for weak or sluggish
kidneys. Are endorsed by thousands
and are endorsed at home. Can any
Mangum reader doubt the following
statement? it's from a resident of
Mangum.
Mrs. W. A. Warrell, of East Jeff.
St., says: "Sometime ago I suffered
with severe attacks of diisiness. My
head fairly whirled and my eyes blur-
red, caused by too much uric acid in
my system. My back pained and ached
especially when I was on my feet very
much. I started to take Doan's Kidney
Pills and received immediate relief. In
a few days, the blurness had left me
entirely and my back ceased to bother
me."

ments appear to disprove assertions
by some observers that simultaneous
inoculation of young pigs is not last
ing, and that immunity disappears at
stages of growth variously placed
from weaning time up to 60 or 60
pounds in weight.

Six wool and worsted manufactur-
ing corporations, with a total capital
stock of 964,000,000, made a net profit
of 930,000,000 after alP federal taxes
had been paid. One made 107 per cent
and the average profit was 60 per
cent. One cotton manufacturer made
131 per cent and five made more than
60 per cent. The report shows that
wholesalers and jobbers made from 10
to 600 per cent on their investment
after federal taxes had been paid. Out
of 300 department stores 20 made
more than .j0 per c$nt, one going as
high as 267 por cent. Were the entire
2064 retail traders in clothing and dry
goods made intu one great corporation
it would have cleared more than 26
per cent on its' actual capital invested
above and beyond all taxes. The ligit-
imate manufacturers and retailers are
not only making abnormal profits but
a horde of -jobbers, brokers and mid-
dlemen are also making abnormal
profits. From beginning to end nearly
every process is highly organized and
determined upon maintaining high
price levelB. It is time to test out
which is the stronger, organized greed
bent upon commercial pilfering and
determined to use the power of gov-
ernment for its selfish ends, or the in-
telligence and spirit of the American
people detrmined upon justice and
fair play."
IMMUNITY TO HOG
CHOLERA LASTING
A series of recent experiments on
duration of immunity to hog cholera
folowing simultaneous inoculation of
young pigs supports the conclusion
that the protection is lasting. The in-
vestigations were conducted atAmes,
Iowa, b y specialists of the United
States Department of Agriculture.
Although 171 pigs inoculated when
a week to 6 weeks old, and exposed to
hog cholera, at times varying from
five months to nine months and twen-
ty-six days later, were fo md without
exception to be immune to that dis-
ease.
Three of the pigs, however, died
during the period of exposva-e from
causes other than hog cholera.
There was no apparent il t effect
from the simultaneous inoculation in
any of the pigs.
There was no difference in the im-
munity of pigs from immune and non
immune sows.
Pigs that were approximately one
week old received 10 cubic centime
ters of antti-hog cholera serum and
1-2 cc. of virus. Pigs that were 3
weeks old or older received IB to 20
cc. of serum and from 1-2 to 8-4 cc.

How They Save Farm Labor.
With a 28-inch horse-drawn plow,
one man accomplishes from 70 to 80
per cent more than with a single-bot-
tom plow. One man with a 28-inch
plow drawn by a tractor covers from
30 to 35 per cent more ground in a
day than does a man using six horses'
on a horse-drawn plow of the same
size. A three-bottom plow drawn by a
suitable tractor enables one man to
accomplish from 60 to 70 per cent
more than does the two-bottom plow
drawn by six horses.
These tacts were brought out by
about 600 replies to an inquiry addres-
sed to farmers in central Illinois by
the Office of Farm Management, Un-
ited States Department of Agricul-
ture. Under conditions where the use
of a two row corn cultivator is prac-
ticable, this machine enables one man
to cover nearly twice as much ground
per day as with a one-row cultivator.
In the section represented by replies
received by the department, three
horss are most commonly used o nthe
two-row cultivator and the addition of
a forth horse apparently increases but
little the amount of ground covered
per day.
Such of these fanners as use corn
binders have found the use of this ma
chine increases the efficiency of man
labor 60 per cent, on the average, over
that achieved when cutting and shock-
ing by hand. Eighty bushels, the re-
port shows i san average day's work
for one man when husking corn from
the standing stalk by hand.
With respect to the value of a hay-
loader they learned that the use of
this implement reduces by about 26
per cent the time required to put on
a load of hay, while the amount o
labor required for unloading into the
mow is only a little more than half
as great when a hayfork is used a*
when the work is done by hand.
WHY CLOTHES ARE HIGH
That there is a concerted effort on
the part of the great monopolies to
expand their influence over both po-
litical parties in an endeavor to con-
trol government and continue reck-
less and unjustified profiteering is the
charge made by Senator Robert L.
Owen, of Oklahoma, in an interview
given to the press of the nation. "The
taste for unusual profits has been
whetted and some men desire to con-
tinue it unmindful of the want, mis-
ery and public danger they entail,"
the senntor said. "We are warned by
the clothing manufacturers that cloth-
ing prices are to go higher. Simul-
taneously comes a statement from
; the National Wool Growers' associa-
tion that the cost to the manufactur-
ers of the wool in a 9?6 suit of clothes
is 97.27. The department of justice
is informed by the president of the
Amalgamated Clothing Workers' Un-
ion that the labor coat is from 912 to
$14. I set forth the other day to find
out who got the other $56 which the
consumer had to pay. Not one of the
government bureaus in Washington
could fumiah the information; nor
could private investigators—no one
knew. A senate committee spent sev-
eral weeks investigating the high cosi
of living and its report filled a thous-
and printed pages, There was not one
word on clothes or dry goods. >

treasury to the senate reveals the pro-

Do in Hours,
Work That Takes
With Horses
Days
Plan your time this year in hours of Tractor work instead of days of horse work. Start this year's
work with a Tractor and get your plowing done exactly the right time, and raise bigger crops. Do your
work with less hired help, or farm more acres with the same help. Let an Avery Tractor make as
much money in a few hours this year as you made in a day before with horses.
You get a Tractor with a "Draft-Horse" Motor built especially for Tractor work and only for Avery
Jractors. They are equipped with renewable inner cylinder walls, adjustable (from the outside)
crankshaft boxes, gasifiers that burn kerosene or distillate into gas and burn it all, and many other
exclusive features.
What You Get in an Avery Tractor
You get the Avery "Direct-Drive" Transmission, which gives you a "Direct-Drive" in high, low, re-
verse or in the belt. There are only six gears, three shafts and three gear contacts between the motor
and the drnw-bar in an Avery Tractor. That's why Avery Tractors are real pullers both at the draw-
bar and in the belt.
Call upon our dealer and see the new 14-28 H. P. Avery Tractor.
