To tin e ditor of Tin Ni.ws:
Dear Sir. Assessor Urban says wo
endeavor to (jive every person an op-
portunity of listing their real estate at
the same time we take Ii is personal as-
sessment.
The tiling that keeps me from brand-
ing the statement as a lie is that I do
not understand the meaning of the
word "endeavor," or iu what sense he
uses it 11c may mean he would like to
do so. but that the commissioners are
his boss, and that lie endeavors to get
tin commissioners to allow him to allow
the tsxpay i rs to value their own prop-
erty. Hut as to giving a list or asking
all of the taxpayers to place a valuation
on their uwn real estate I know to lie
false. And I state that they try to pro
vent the same as follows: 'l'ho assessor
came to my house on block 44, West
Guthrie, and listed my personal prop-
erly I asked liim if lie was not listing
real estate also, and he said "No." He
said lie was coming around again to list
real estate He never told me ho
wanted me to list real estate or furnish-
ed a list for that purpose. I. like a fool,
subscribed to the personal property list.
but at that time there was no rcul estate
listed on it or has there been since by
inc. And 1 give fair warning now if
there shall be any list of real estate in
Kertcil on said list that I will prosecute
them for forgery
From the actions of said assessor I
concluded that he wag appraising and
listing real estate, ami, being of a sus-
picious nature, 1 thought they might be
inserting the real estate over our sigua
tnres on the personal property list. I
thought that it was a scheme they had
to put our real estate in at an eutnigc-
ous valuation. 1 wrote a statement of
it and tiled to have it published, so as
to protect the people as well as myself
The paper that it was given to did not
publish it, but it had its effect, a couple
of days afterwards the assessor came
buck and we agreed 011 a certain valua-
tion for that particular piece of real
estate, lmt he could not take the list of
real estate iu the other subdivisions of
Outline. Neither was it inserted on the
list. His explanation for coming again
to assess the . lots was that he did not
have a map before. I had the
deeds, which was the best evidence.
Well, after he had gone I thought
I would go out and see what
kind of a valuation he placed on 11151
neighbors real estate, but it seemed
that he did not pay and attention to
them as I failed to find tho tirst one ho
had seen. Now if the above statement
is 11 definition of endeavor, why has
he endeavored uot to.get a list
I afterward went to see I'rbau my-
self and asked him if lie was assessing
Guthrie Proper anil lie said. No: but
he liml assessed Capitol Hill, and I asked
tn see the valuation. He showed me
the valuation which was four times the
yalne uf the property. I asked him
how lie could assess property without
the knowledge of the owner, and he
seemed to think the owner had about hh
much right as a slaye would before the
war'
I.nst year he assessed all my real
estate without my knowledge. Further
more lie went and changed an assess-
ment after the 1st of April which I
know by reason of his adding i* 12ft to a
lot and for an excuse said a house bad
been moved on to it, which house was j
not moyed until after the 1st of April j
w hich assessment is 111 violation j
of the law .
I might have stood allot the above
but when it. comes to rcdiculing we
and calling me a fool, I draw the line
right there See his statement.
Hut almost all of of the people prefer
to allow the assessor to list their prop
crt.y without suggestions from them.
Just see the gall of that man to statu
that most all the people are fools and
that they have no more seuse than to
want him to value their property.
Is it not about time for the people to
awake to the situation:- Their prop-
erty is already one third gone and if
they do not act now the rest of it w ill
go. Don't pay any attention to men
who tell you not to talk, that you are
hurting the city, you will find that they
have a linger 111 the pic and they do not
care one piocauue for it.

This talk about drill and meneylens
times in this territory "don't go" when
looded squarely in the face. Today,
probably, financially, the worst twenty-
tour hours in these l/nited States his-
tory, during the last quarter of a cen-
tury. Guthrie, an interior town with
one railroad, a trading ctftiter for an, as
yet, undeveloped country, has moro
than twenty-five houses in process of
erection. Stop, think and comprehend
before making another kick. And all
this without mining, railroad or other
excitement. You see there is but one
cause for it all, and that cause is,
"Guthrie." f o3's, stand by her. it will
