The Oklah« man never lom* an oportunity to make a thrust at home
of the country weeklies. Much like a country weekly itself, it seem- to
enjoy pointing out the little shortcomings to which every country week-
ly is suoject.
Somebody criticises the editor of the Democrat for being m> liberal
with his advice. Well, that's what we are here fur. Of course we
know how everything ought to be done or we would have no business in
a newspaper office. And knowing how it ought to be done, wouldn t
we l e stingy to refuse the readers the benefit of our knowledge?] We
are just like nine tenths of the (other people.-we know just how the
other fellow ought to do and don't mind telling him about it
Red Tape in Our Courts
The most ex pensive! luxury enjoyed by the American people is i n
their courts of lav.. It is supposed to lie instituted to protect the weak
and helpless, and enable every man to secure his rights. As a matter of
fa-t it is a failure as an institution. Luckily we have many wise men
on the bench, such as Judge Brown in our own district court, who are
doing what they can to make the courts efficient agencies in securing
the rights of the people, but hedged about as they are with red tape
and formality and precedent and technicallities on every hand, they are
impotent.
Suppose you have a little case to be adjudicated, onejinvolving an
amount of money less than several hundred dollars. In the first place
youv'e got to put up for the costs, an attorney must be hired, witnesses
must be summoned. You doom yourself to an indefinite sentence iu h-
waiting the termination of the case: you may have to attend court day
after day and then have it continued from term to term. It may final-
ly come to trial after you hpve lost enough time to more than make up
for the amount of money involved in the suit, only to lose your case on
aorr.e technicality about which the courts themselves furnish authority on
both sides.
The fate of the case may turn upon some little circumstances that
really have nothing to do with the merits of the case. Or, if it is a
foreclosure proceeding, where judgment has been had by default, . it
may take years to get your money. On the other hand you may be sued
by any body able to make bond for costs, carried away from your home
and business and made to suffer without cause or excuse. If you are a
witness in a case you may made 'to travel many miles to sttand
court, leaving your business at a critical time, lose deals perhaps that
mean much to you, only to have the case continued at the last to an-
other term. No, a wise man will steer clear of the courts as long as
there is a possible chance to get a settlement in any other manner.
A! Jennings for Governor
New York and Washington papers have been the mediums through
which A1 Jennings has apprised the world of his intention to be the next
governor of Oklahoma. This foretells the methods which will character-
ize his campaign. Everyone familiar with the trend of Jennings' plans
knows that if in fact he docs enter the race his sole object will be the
advertising he will get out of it. No sane man believes that the people
of this state have so far Install sense of the proprieties as to elevate a
man of this character to the highest office in the state, when his record
is read and known by all men. It is a disgrace to the manhood of this
state to forecast such a posibility.
Yet'.here is little doubt but the ex-bandit will be a factor in the
campaign. No doubt he will visit the various sections of the state pro-
mulgating his vicious and venomous charges and imputations, arousing
the rabble to the highest pitch of excitement, playing npon the pas-
sions and prejudices of men as a devil incarnate. He is a past master
in arousing the baser nature of his hearers. Like Mephistopheles he
plays upon the sordid, bitter, baneful impulses of those who hear him.
Reform will be his text, character assignation hi? weapon. He wili
stir the waters of state politics until the mud and slime that may
hap have filtered to the bottom is brought to the surface.
If he were really in earnest in his desire to reform th's state and
really had information of wrong doing by state officials, he Would long
ago have laid his information before some prosecuting officer t.iat the
guilty parties might be punished. But his charges will not consist of
definite statements. They will consist of generalities and immendoes
couched in language best calculated to stir up the baser passions of his
hearers. His is the doctrine of disruption and disintegration. He pur-
poses to ride over the writhing bodies of fallen victims to popularity
and renown.
We believe he has failed to measure his field,—that his ideas will
not foster that popular support he hopes to win for them. The people
of this state feel like ifheisreallyreformed.it will take a life-time
of quiet and humble service to his state to wipe out the stigma of his for-
