know about a certain pistol robbery.
« I«I Mr. Drummond,
lepression and its primary I uftei years of palieiil study and <
cause. He says that this depression is
not confined to this country alone, but
that it at present pervades all civilized
communities. All th« would of business,
and of thinking men, are casting about
in their minds to account for the indiis
trial and llnancial disturbance. Iu this
country this disturbance is more iu-
tense. and likely to be more prolonged,
than iu many others, because it is a
new and hitherto easily remedied con-
dition, that environs us. One of these
tremendous forces to which more than
anything else just now maybe attribu-
ted. tho want, misery and financial
pressure that so universally prevails, is
the movement of the population city
and town-ward. This movement of the
population has been far more radical,
and far more rapid, than is generally
comprehended, and has reached pro-
portions so stupendous as to make al-
most everything else sink out of sight
in the minds of those who estimate it in
its true proportions, and in its true
significance.
That the country was prosperous
when a larger proportion resided on
farms is proof positive that such s con-
dition is favorable to prosperity. That
an industrial disturbance exists and
hard times everywhere prevail, when
the cities become crowded is further
evidence that such a condition is fatal
to prosperity.
A moment's reflection will show tlmt
the cities are not dependent ou them-
selves fur prosperity. Iu the first pluce.
it is plain that for food, fibre aud fuel
the bases of existence- the city is de-
pendent solely upon the farmer and the
miner. Without these, the cities would
perish from hunger and cold Hot the
power of absorption of what the city
produces, rests with the farmer and ths
miner, and it is in exchange for food,
fibre aud fuel that the cities get a mar-
ket for what they produce. If the wants
of the cities enormously increase be-
cause of their great size and the lack
"f proportion is maintained in the num -
ber of customers in the country, it will
be seen that only may the price of I
whaa the farmer and miner produces
greatly increase, but the power to ab
sorb the output of of the city propor-
tionately decreases.
