On Mlireh iOtb Duleyate Flynn intro-
duced a liill allowing settlers in the
strip to prove up after fourteen month's
residence. If the people could l>e
brought to realize the effect of such a
bill, there would be such a public up
rising in its favor that congress would
pass the bill with all possible haste so
as to rid themselves of the howling
multitude. Such a law would more
thau, four times multiply the taxable
property in the strip, reduce the num-
ber of producers by letting the non-
farming element off their lauds nnd
thus decrease the output, in that way
increasing the per cent demand for
cereals. Tun Nkws wishes Dennis
success.

This territory is injured *2 for every
dollar that leaves it unnecessarily. The
public never realizes the effect of tho
silent, constant drain upon western re-
sources by eastern insurance com-
panits In Guthrie alone the insurance
annually amounts to something; more
than *900,000, and the policy money
sent from every other town in Oklaho-
ma cannot but have a bad effect on the
circulation of every other town in the
territory. But, speaking of Guthrie
alone, the insurance will average about
2 per cent on the dollar, making, for
the total, * 180,000. This $180,000, with
the exception i f |."> per cent, remains in
the hands <>f local insurance agents.
This 15 per cent amounts to $2,700,
leaving *1>,00() annually, leaving Guth-
rie i<>r the coffers of eastern money
holders.

The Morning Patent, alias the Morn-
ing Thief, yesterday morning davoted
the greater portion of its space to abus-
ive, untruthful and idiotic prattle about
a man and a newspaper that seems to
have incurred its displeasure. Although
Mr. Thompson's name is not used, nor
does the name of 'fur. \r.ws appear, it
can be seen they are referred to for the
reason that The News is the only paper
iu the city now making il uncomfort-
able, financially unhealthy and person-
ally unpleasant for the Patent ami its
editor.
In order to save space in a valuable
paper and argument with an untruth
fill fool. Tub News submits correspond-
ence covering the subject in ipiestion.
Daily News Ollicc 11«>n. IP. McCabe,
Secretary of the Republican Cit ytVii-
t rn I ('ommittce
Sir Enclosed please find a clipping
from Reiifrow's and Roy's paper. In
the letter written Mr McCabe, the ar-
ticle in question was enclosed, but i#
not printed here as it is of too little
value to waste composition on The
article does this paper an injustice.
Although The News admits that it is
supporting u number of republicans for
municipal oflice, still its editor insists
that no purchase was made.
Will you, Mr. McCabe. us committee
man. answer this note.
W. P. Thompson,
Editor News.
(ii thhie, (). T., March 22, 1804.
W P Thompson, Editor Daily Nkws.
Sit Unfortunate to all our local in-
terests, the journals of Guthrie appear
to be inimical to the prosperity of each
other, snd w hy the city central commit-
tee of the republican party should be
called upon to enter or contribute to
such a light is not patent.
You. sir, have, as an editor, exercised
your preogative as a firm man iu select-
ing candidates from the tickets nomi-
nated, which yon are pleased to speak
kindly of in this, our local canvass, and
lis not king novel or new for you to do.
.lust why the opposition to us should,
by direct charges, shift or shoulder
upon our committee an indecent
charge of barter and sale, that which
we have no knowledge of, is not clear.
The Daily Leader is not in sympathy
with us or our methods, as yon, sir.
must be cognizmt. That they are at-
tempting to use you as they would us,
is too ridiculous, to say the least, in
that knowing them to be in opposition
to us and asking no quarters from them
in spite of the bid iu their platform it
is simply begging the question to lash
the committee on your shoulders, per
uiit me to suggest that they discuss can
didates and issues in which the people
are interested and not side lights.
Respectfully, •
E, P. McCabe.
