Tai:ijeui'ah, I. T.. June !i The day
of the big Cherokee payment hits passed
without incident. Nearly $!hm.imh> has
been handed out to fortunate ('lierokees,
and $100 bills are In-coming numerous.
Money is uo object here and everybody
is growing happier. The crowd is still
l>eiug augmented by the arrival of hun-
dreds of people daily, and the entrance
to the pay window is jammed with an
immense concourse of people from day-
break until uight.
The rush has become so great and ac-
cess to the pay windows so uncertain
that a general brokerage business has
been inaugurated by a couple of enter-
prising capitalists now oil the ground.
The way in which they are working is
simple enough, but protests are lieing
made by the collectors for merchants
and others. These brokers are paying
Cherokee! per capita at a small discount
upon presentation aud acceptance of the
power of attorney to collect the amount
from the Cherokee treasurer. These
brokers are doing a good business with
the Cherokee)), aud many of them draw
from them the amount of their per cap-
ita and then depart for their homes
without ever being seen iu the treasur-
er's office. The certificates will be pre-
sented aud paid off by the Cherokee
treasurer at leisure and all will be satis-
fied.

Just before the steamer sailed from

virulent form and in six hours !W deaths
were reported. Officers have been de-
tailed to look after the dead bodies

plague had its origin in filth and dirt
aud thrives best in the poorer quarters.
It is similar to typhus.
