opportunity to show your ability; or either calm
down or put up. Of course, you will claim that
we are wrong. It is natural for a Catholic priest
to believe that he is right, and to deny all the
charges brought against Catholicism, so it is with
the priests of socialism, and we do not expect any
thinir better of you—it seems to be a foregone
conclusion with the radical socialists to never ad-
mit that they are beaten in nny debate with their
opponents, nor by any who assay to write against
them, and you seem to be one among this sort.
I have heard you make a number of statements
which you couldn't substantiate to save your life,
and at one time I offered you five dollars in cash
if you would answer certain questions for me;
and you failed to answer. I still make you this
same offer. You suy you think we should havu
called the last issue of The Antidote the "Anti-
Stallard edition." No doubt you will think this
issue is another "anti-Stallard editon" before you
are through with it, and perhaps there will be
more "anti-Stallard editions," for you have put
yourself on record as one who denies each and
every charge brought against the socialists by
any writer in The Antidote (prior to this issue we
presume.) This is saying a whole lot. 1 am
afraid Mr. Staliard that you have nipped off quite
a bit more than you can swallow. But The Anti-
dote will make you swallow something if you keep
fooling with it. I brand any socialist as a moral
coward who will deny anything which I have
written and then refuse to prove his position when
he is given an opportunity to do so. So, Mr.
Staliard, it is up to you to either make good, or
back down. If you back down I shall take It to
mean that vou cannot refute my charges against
socialism. You must come up with the goods or
step down and out. Mr. Staliard, you personally
told me a few days ago that if it could be shown
that socialism stands for confiscation you would
quit the socialist party. Now I have made this
charge in The Antidote and I challenge you to
refute it If socialism <i^es not stand for con-
fiscation it does not stand for anything.
You say you "cannot understand people when
they bring the charge against the socialists of
being anti-religious." When we say the socialists
arc anti-religious we mean that they are opposed
to the Christian religion, or the Christian faith.
No one who is well ^formed on socialism ca:
truthfuly say that the radical socialists are any-
thing else but anti-religious for it is a fact based
upon scientivc principles, that no man can en-
dorse socialism with its materialistic conception
of history, economic determinism and Darwin-
ism, and embrace the Christian faith at the same
time; and. Mr. Sthllard. if you endorse these
things vou are anti-i^ligious yourself. There are
some in the socialist party who have not vet
reached the line in socialist philosophy which ;s
calculated to render them anti-religious. Swh as
these may still hold to the Christian faith (if
they have it> but if they ever fully endorse the
socialist philosophy, they will become anti-
religious.
We will give a few quotations from some of
the leading socialists of th< world which «ihow that
all the radical socialists are anti-religious. Whe i
I say radical socialists I mean those who have
endorsed the socialist philosophy. They are as
follows:
James Leathman sayst "At the present mo-
ment I cannot remember a single instance of a
person who is a^ one and the same time a really
earnest and intelligent socialist and an orthodo*
Christian. Marx, Lassalle and Engels, among the
earlier socialists; Morris, Max, Hyndman, Guesde
and Bebel, among the present, say socialists
are all more or less avowed Atheists, and what
is true of the more notable men of the party is
almost equally true of its rank file the world
over." (Socialism and Character pages 2-8
London, 1897.)
William English Walling: "The majority of
socialists are firmly convinced that socialism and
modern science will finally lead to a state of
society where there will be no room whatever
for religion of any form." (The Larger Aspects
of Socialism page 381, N. Y., 1913.)
Geo. Pleachanoff and Fenerhach.: "Religion,
conscience, right, law, family, state are so many
fetters framed upon me in the name of abstrac-
tion, but many despotic lords whom I—the
individual—conscious of my 'concerns' combat by
every means in my power" .... (Your Religion,
Anarchy and Socialism, page 42.)
E. Unterman says: "No one will accuse mo
with any sympathy with Christianity, either as
church or as a religion."
Robert Rlatchford says: "Christianity is not
tft-ue'i" (God and My Neighbor.) "Communism
abolishes eternal truths, it abolishes all religion
and all morality instead of constituting them on
a new basis." (Communist Manifesto) Marx
and En gel's "No Compi-omise." William Leibkne,
pages 43-44. We couild yive more than a hundred
quotations from socialist authors to show that
they are anti-religious but space will not permit.
If what the leading socialist writers say is true a
majority of the socialists are anti-religious and
if what they says is not true then they lie. 1/
any think that the socialists are not anti-re-
ligious let them read the infidel books that the
social'/sts are publishing and scattering among
the people, and the Rip Saw and Melting Pot.
These fairly sparkle with infidelity and anti-
relisrion. To these all revealed religion is a
superstition. Yes, Mr. Staliard, the radical so-
cialists are anti-religious, and you know it. and
ycu had just as well admit the fact. It is no
credit to you to defend the doctrine of this set of
infidels.
You say it seems like if we "had true religioa
we would be very careful how we talked so as to
convert you socialists." We have tried to get
your eyes open, but you refuse to see. We have
warned you of the dangrcr which socialist
nhilosophv is leading you into but you refuse to
heed; and now we have come to the conclusio.i
that it is useless to use persuasion any lonerer, so
we will expose the evijs of socialism and thereby
try to prevent others from falling in£o the snare.
I am by the socialist as Abraham was with th^
rich man in hell: when lie wanted him to send
Lazarous to warn his five brethren lest they also
should come into that place of torment, Abraham
said to him: "They have Moses and the prophets,
let them hear them. If they will not hear then
they would not believe if one jjnse from the dead."
Now you socialists not only have Moses and the
prophets, but you hnve fhe New Testament, and
you have the Gospel and the world is full of
churches and ministers and you have been warn-
ed and now if you will not hear them you would
not believe if one rose from the dead. Have you
read my article in the Anril issue of The Anti-
dote. entitled. "Once a Socialist Alwavs a So-
cialist"? This refers to that class of "cumrids"
who have pone beyond the line of redemption;
these have become so imbued with socialist
philosophy. Infidelity, Atheism, Darwinism, free-
loveism. and other socialistic rot that there is no
hope for them: and so we do not think it worth
our time fooling with them.. Now. Mr. Staliard.
if vou are not satisfied with this reply come again
and we will cheerfully hand out some more for
you.

SKIM FROM THE MELTING POT
Bv J. L. Montgomery.
The Melting Pot is one of the standard socialist,
free-lance rationalist, monthlv majrazines publish-
ed St. Louis. Mo., printed at the "Rip Saw" em-
porium. Henrv E. Tiehenor. editor. It is one of
the worst blackcuard profane and vulvar sheets
we have even seen. In order that all may know
just what kind of a periodical it is we will give
our readers a brief review of the April 1st issue, as
manv do not read it even well informed socialists;
who deny that such vile rot in the form of so-
cialiat literature is being circulated. We wish to
further preface oar remarks with tfcp statement,
that in order to meet and expose the fallacies of
socialism we must first find out what it teaches
Many who claim to be socialists, will contend that
the socialist papers and text book writers only
express their individual opinion and dos not bind
socialists who are only governed by the platform.
In fact the platform is at best nothing more than
the old populist platform revamped with a few
progressive things added to make the bait easier
for the suckers to swallow. Its not the socialist
platform that is moulding the minds of people, in-
stilling hatred and disloyalty for popular govern-
ment, and open avowed opposition to God and re
ligion, but its the socialist standard text books an !
literature of which the Melting Pot is the chiel
of sinners. We have two reasons for taking up
these criticisms: 1—to let all know what the Ap-
peal to Reason, Rip Saw and Melting Pot teach,
also their text books. 2—To show how easy it i.s
to expose their Atheism, Darwinism and Economi
Determinism," all of which are comprehended :n
the popular phrase, "The Socialist Philosophy,'
with this explaination we will briefly review the
April issue of the Melting Pot The front page
contains a cartoon, the skeleton of a man, sur-
rounded by vultures, (or turkey buzzards) having
picked all the flesh from the skeleton leaving it
standing staring at you, labeled, "Preparedness
with the brass button^ off," such characterization
is repulsive to any one especially children; is mis-
leading and breeds contempt anarchy and hatred
for a government that is organized for the very
purpose of protecting us from powerful foreign
foes; protects our homes, our families, our lives,
our liberties. We already have peace. What are
ask is that it shall be guaranteed to us in tho
future. It is misleading, repuMve" and almost
sacriligious.
The next article is a criticism of a female phy-
sian of Washington, D. C., who advocates a new
plan to re-populate Europe after the war. Both
the plan and Tichenor's criticism are of the im-
modist, vulgar, filthy, vocabulary and ought to
be excluded from the mails. A cartoon showing
an animal human monstrosity, gnawing a human
skull. Such rot could but lower the moral stand-
ard and excite the basest animal nature of all who
read it; therefore should not be allowed circulation
through the mails.
The next is a little attack on the Catholic church
and winds up on the orthodox or evangelical bunch
and after characterizing tftgm as '^professional
Hell pedlers," emits the following:
And yet with all our boasted advancement
these creatures are allowed to mould the lives
of budding childhood—to fill young brains with
falsehood and fear at an age when the brain
is receptive to every suggestion offered. I
have said before, and I repeat it, that there
ought to be a law fvrbidding the teaching of
the orthodox Christian creeds with their hell-
and-damnation lies to any person under 21
years of age. If it is good to keep minors out
of saloons, then it is far better to keep them
out of orthodox churches. Better poison the
young stomach with rum than madden the
young mind with the monstrosities of orthodox
Christianity.
We have no comment to make on the above ex
cept to say that if the socialists who stand for the
above would put that in their platform (for it i
the true socialist doctrine) then we could appeal to
those who do not believe it but yet claim to be
socialists. We would soon have the socialist
party reduced to its original plan of government,
and none but Atheists, Agonstics and free-lovers
would remain in its ranks. This is the line ot
battle. We are just beginning to get- them un-
covered and on the run.
The next is a tirade against Billy Sunday's meet-
ings where multiplied thousands are "hitting the
saw-dust trail." A whole page cartoon with
vulgar and critical flings, one of which is not fit
for decent people to read, as follows:
Billy Sunday's frightful description of an
angry God plunging unbelievers into hellfire
drives the poor people frantic; and then, when
he points the way to escape the brimstone
pit by loading all their sins on Jesuts, the re-
action is too much—they give one last grunt,
froth at the mouth, apd collapse.
They are saved in the next world, even if
they are never themselves again in this.
This only shows the crude idea of religion and
revival methods. The Melting Pot's socialistic free
love "regime under socialism would better suit
their idea, but socialism won't thrive nor do much
harm where Billy Stinday circulates. No they
don't like Billy Sunday.
A double header telling about a fellow who
went craxy and killed his mother in order to huny
her up to Heaven. Lays it all at Sunday's feet
and winds up with an editorial by Debs saying that
