t Mangum Culture Clpb.
The Mangum Culture £1ud mat on
February 1, at ^he home of Mrs. Hen-
don and responded to roll call with a
resume of the notable events of tbe
Week. The Elizabethan period was
marked by the brilliant circles of the
court, which was adorned by the liter-
ati of the day, the knigihts and ad-
mirals who had won fame abroad, an i
the chivalrie soldiers who glaJlv
fought for their illustrious queen. A
remarkable growth in national opirit
nas engendered by the policy of ex-
pansion, and the whole kingdom
awoke to a sense of its greatness and
power. This may partly explain the
"myriad minded Shakespear-j' who
grew up when the imagination ruled,
and idealism was in the air.
Shakespeare's life at Stratfoi 1 and
his early work in Lonlon, where his
transcendant genius was develops i,
were all reviewed with interest. "Rare
Ben Jonson," the firs; official?/ ap-
pointed poet laureate, was placed nex:
to the "immortal William" in dramat c
art. Jonson moulded beautiful hy
ures, but they lacked the breath of
life. Mrs. Carps gave an interesting
sketch of the elegiac poet, Gray, whose
dreams were mournful musiJ. Mrs.
Harness gave a bright account if tae
English child, but the club decided
that the quicker wltted American child-
ren challenged our warmer admira-
tion.
The club will meet February 8th
