It is a pity that France will make so
much fuss over the asmssin Cascerio.
Such mircrcants should be killed quiet-
ly. He was insolent during the trial,
but wilted when sentenced to death,
and displayed the same sort of sensi-
bility that was noticed in "Mr Prend-
ergast" when the play of insanity was
over. Cascerio was during the trial
plainly posing for the subterranean
anarchial audience.
Mr. Debs aspires to li« the intellect-
ual leader of consolidated labor unions.
His hopes became worthy of attention
when he pledged himself to advise
against strikes for the future But in
giving his reasons he did what an in-
tellectual leader cannot do very often—
he grossly misrepresented familiar facts
"The Government" he said, "is ready
to put down strikes with the bayonet."
The government is not ready to do any
thing of the kind. As long as it is a
government lit to survive it will be
ready to put down disorder aud to
make the law the rule of conduct,
