\eHterday a representative of this
paper was detailed to visit Oklahoma
[ City and inquire into facts as to the
Scott McMmters case. After investi
gatiou our representative states that
Scott, the fledgling judge, could uot
command the respect of one out of ten
of any of the respectable citizens of Ok
lahoma county. Tito people there arc
indignant They insist that this diapc
judge, clothed with authority, has en
deavored to squelch it man of intelli-
gence, ami that that man is a democrat,
and that his name is Frank McMasters.
Our representative says that ho visited
McMasters iu his room and that thu old
man s tid, I bought the poison with
the intention of taking it after I entered
the jail doors. Scott and his friends
have persecuted me, and, realizing that
I could not live in confinement, I pre-
ferred a hasty death. Friends advised
me not to pursue this course. Con-
science dictated that after being sub-
jected to making mi apology, rather
than linger in jail, I had better doit."
Mr. McMasters said these words as
printed above disjointedl.v; that he was
suffering was evident: that lie was con-
scientious was apparent; that the listen
era measured each syllable intelligently
was noticeable.
McMasters lingers between lire arid
death, owing to the severe sentence of
Scott we are satisfied: that Scott the
judge will be responsible for this
man s death, should it occur, we have
hesitation in asserting.- that the
screws were put to the old man Mc-
Masters because he had dared to show
up the libertine judge, We affirm: thai
the strain was too much for him to bear
of imprisonment in a county jail for six
mouths, as directed, is apparent.
Should McMasters die after bein
placed behind the bars by a diaper
judge, will the people of this territory
hurrah? We believe not. Men, like
McMasters, who fought for the preser-
vation of this union, never die. They
live, like pines, through winter and
summer, and their memory ever re
mains green.
Shame ou the people of Oklahoma
City: Shame ou the people of this ter-
ritory should they permit Scott, the
fledgling judge, to bury this old man,
McMasters who has defiantly stood for
right.
Would to God that be could, like a
phienix, rise up. There is a chance lor
him, but the chance is doubtful: despo-
tism seems to be Scott's weapon. It
editors' heads that he is after, and the
axe will fall indiscriminately, provided
. a resistance is not made. Scott declared
j recently that he would order the sheriff
. of <)klahonia county to empanel a jury
should citizens and editors meet in Ok-
lahoma City for the purpose of de-
nouncing his recent sentence 011 Mc-
Masters Some men will meet there
and they will deliberate regardleis of
this fledgling judge.
