Editor Enterprise:
I beg to say that in all proba-
bility I shall not have the plea-
sure of attending the Oklahoma
City Convention. It is my hope
that it will be a good old-fashiun-
ed harmonious Democratic Con-
vention and that it will lay the
foundation for a splendid Demo-
cratic victory in November. I
feel that I ought to take this
means of saying that I do not de-
sire to go and I do not seek to go
as a delegate to the St. Loui^
Convention. Opposing as I do
all forms of monopoly, I am, of
course, opposed to a monopoly
on political favors and honors.
The Democracy of Oklahoma
has thrice honored me with a
nomination to the United States
Senate. I appraise this honor
above all price. In 1912, for
reasons which I deemed suffi-
cient, I sought to go as a dele-
gate to the Baltimore Conven-
tion. The Democracy generou -
ly gratified this wish. That
was one of the most interesting
and the moat memorable conven-
tions in the history of the party
or in the history of the country.
In 1908 I declined to permit the
use of my name for selection as
a delegate to the National Con-
vention. It is, of course, an
honor and privilege to represent
the Democracy of Oklahoma in
any national convention.
The forthcoming convention,
however, will be in its nature
little more than a ratification
meeting. No other name than
Ihfct of the President will be
presented for consideration.
There are many Democrats in
Oklahoma who desire the honor
and who deserve the honor of
going as a delegate to this con-
vention. For my own part I
esteem it both a duty and a plea-
sure to forego a claim to this
pleasure in behalf of other
Democrats who, while not le.ss j
worthy, have been less honored'
than myself at the hands of the ,
Democracy of the State. Thes • •
reasons are sufficient withir
themselves to induce and justil.< I
my decision in the premises.

content my self with serving as

ing as much time as possible in

a brilliant and traditional tri-
umph in behalf of a united/:ul
deserving Democracy.
I beg to call your attentipn to
the enclosed resolution which I
introduced in the Senate on Jan-
uary 17th. It was intended to
prevent such massacres as re-
cently occured at Columbus,
New Mexico, and to avert the
necessity of our invasion of
Mexico. I am confident that if
it had been adopted in due time
the present serious situation,
fraught with such tragic con-
sequences, would not have come
upon our country.
