Yesterday's roping contest ha.
gone into local history as one of the
most pleasant events of the kind in
Greer eounty. The stirring sport
was witnessed by at leas 1509 peo-
ple, everyone of whom expressed
satisfaction at tbe complete and rap-
id manner in which the affair i
pulled off by the committee of i
rangements. John Byers acted
judge or the contest aad covered
himself with fresh laurels.
There weie six entries
contest, namely, Messrs. H. T. Hoo-
ver, W R Hext, Joe Thompson, J
W Childress, Sam Rude and Nash
Raey. Hoover started first aud
roped his stser in 3 min.; Hext, by
an excusable mishap, scored a goose
egg; Childress bellowing animal was
tied down in 3:15; Sam Rude, Msn-
gum's owa and only Sam, thrilled
srowd by completing
in 2:17,' but Rash Racy, tbe
dark-skinned, good-natured, easy
going son of the Mexican plaias,
roped the steer he went after, in 1
thereby winning the first price of
$40.00. Rude corralled second moo
ey, *15.®0, aad Hoover, through tbe
good aad timely office, of a waader-
in* dog, third, $5.00. Mr Racy haa
issued proclamation, that he will
receive coagratulatioas from ladiee
only, aad these mast be delivered ia
several preceding years, farmers
were financially embariased aud
taxes were a heavy burden- The
reverse is true in Greer county now.
Generous rainfalls have recently
enriched tbe soil of the country,
crops are seen everywhere in luxur
ious abundance, farms are yielding
handsome incomes, and farmers here
abouts, compared with husbandmen
in other sections of the United
States, are indeed prosperous and
contented.
No commodity was as valuable in
the panic year of 1896 its it is in
this year jf grace, 1899, unless it be
the Sun's adyertising space, which
is always valueless. Tet The Star
does the same county printing now.
m reasonably good times, tor 50
cents per squsre, that the Sun, thro'
populist collusion, exacted 75 eents
per square for in times of stagnation.
If 50 cents per square is too
much for public printing in 1899,
75 cents per square was an extortion
for that kind of work in 1896. If
the Sua*, editor has a conscience,
he will remit the difference to the
county treasurer.
We bare at present a populist
sheriff aad clerk in this county. I las
ybody ever read one of their ad-!
veriisement* for bids on the print j
ing of their respsctive offices? We j
opine not. They give it all to the
Sun. and tbe Son is well paid for'
it. The Stab doe. not entertain a j
single personal objection to that, and
has knocked the brains out of the
gentleman who frst wielded it
And now, for the information of
the public, we will say that 50 cts.
per square is only a fair, moderate
