And then Sair. looked slyly at
Washoe George, and they all burst
Into a roar of sarcastic laughter, and
Jim got up, and, wrapping his
blanket close about him, walked
away, trembling to the very feather
in his old straw hat with indigna-
tion.
Oh, could Mahala Susie have seen
Iter man then, as he walked oft lone*
ly and unhappy, she must have re-
lented !
But Mahala Susie just then was
■op on the hill, where, since her dc-
eertion of Jim. she had slept in the
little woodshed adjoining the house
whose floors her worn, red-brown
"hands kept clean and smelling of
brown soap.
Susie had sone ofT to her bed in
the woodshed earlv. She had worked
since dawn. She had washed even-
window in the house, she had done
-the weekV washing, she had scrubbed
the kitchen, she had waited upon
the bu?y mother while she trimmed
the Christmas tree, which they had
left over night in the woodshed, that
the curious children might not see
It till Christmas nisrht.
Susie divested hwself first of her
street costume, a gaudy, red calico
nkirt and a purple plaid jacket.
Then she took off her working gown
beneath, a sober, dirty, suds-colored
one. Her emergency rig came next,
end an old flannel wrapper that had
Wn given her the day before was
also removed. Mahala Susie was
really not ill-looking when the great-
er part of her wardrobe had been
shed. One could well understand
Jim's valuation of her and the ex-
tent of his loss, in realizing the
-strength of those broad hips and
Tound, copper)-, muscular arms.
Poor Jim! 1 wonder whether Ma-

POLICE CALL ON CHRISTMAS DAY
Bad man, With Gun, raised Disturb-
ance at Rock Island Depot.
Friday afternoon, a man driving a
! delivery wagon, came hurriedly to the
'northwest corner and called for an
o.iieer. He declared there was a man
at the depot making things lively.
| Marshal Shipley, Deputy Cox an*
I Boh Burden at once took passage on
j the wagon and were driven to the
j scene of trouble.
It appears that a^me time last week
ja man named Simpson went to the
doll and, holding it toward thc a per- home of his father-in-law, Sam
ture, began to scalp it, Susie capit- sharks. This was during the ab-
ulated. She opened the woodshed
door and Jim entered.
Down toward the dumps, where
the bucks sit in a blanketed circle 'for a time. He threatened
about the camptire. gambling, and Sparks when he saw him.
the chattering squaws huddle togeth-
er, strode Jim, the conqueror, and
Mahala Susie followed. As Jim ex-
plained, her absence was no longer
necessary or logical, now that he
had all her money.
So she followed him, her bowed,
sence of Sparks. Simpson proceeded
to raise a disturbance, broke up a lot
of furniture and made things lively
to kid
Sparks
made application to the town officers
for leave to carry a pistol, but was re-
jected.
On Friday afternoon be proceeded
to the depot where Simpson had gone,
drew his gun on Sina.Bon and march-
ed him back to the house, a few
blocks northwest. Then the officer*
were sent tor. Both men were ar-
and ccats. Sim peon was released.
