Practically Whole Crop Sold to Illi-
nois Brokers and Mixed With
Northern Product.
Guthrie, Okla.,.Sept. 3—An Investi-
gation of the sale of practically all
the broom coin grown in Oklahoma to
Illinois brokers and commission men
reveals the fact that corn from the
Territory Is mixed with corn grown in
Illinois, rebaled and sold at an Im-
mense profit over the price paid in
this Territory. Immense warehouses
are used in which not only to store
the Illinois corn, but also for the pur-
pose of mixing and rebaling the Ok-
lahoma product with the home-grown
It is sold throughout the United States
as native broom corn.
At present the price paid in Illi-
nois, according to press reports from
the broonicorn belt, is J90 per ton for
the new crop and $100 for the old, or
held-over, corn. In one Instance the
report states that the crop stored by
a farmer for the last four years was
sold at $104 per ton during the lajt
week. The same buyers bought the
new crop at $90.
The new crop in Oklahoma is now
selling at $3u to $60 per ton and buy-
ers are in the field from all over Illi-
nois. They vie with each other in
getting the larger share of the crop,
but are also careful that the price per
ton does not go above the figures
quoted. Perhaps the highest price
ever paid in Oklahoma was $65 to $70
per ton. and that was when the Illi-
nois crop was short.
Warehousemen say the Oklahoma
corn is. of a somewhat lighter grade
than that grown in Illinois, but that
when mixed with the latter it makes
an excellent broom, superior even to
that made exclusively from the Illi-
nois corn. Because of the climate, !t
is said, the crop can be grown at much
less expense here than in Illinois, and
the constant increase in acreage in
Oklahoma is causing the Illinois grow-
ers considerable worry.

Of what other section of the country
could this be said? Is it not indica-

More hands are needed in Indian

to develop the wonderful possibilities
there. There is a demand for even

There are splendid chances for young
