J. C. Dewberry and Mrs. Francis
Dewberry, both of Route 6, were mar-
ried Sunday afternoon at four o'clock
by Judge McConnel.
Worth C. Mead and Annie B. Steel
were married last night at 11:15 o'clock
by Judge McConnell. This young
couple outwitted the bride's parents and
came to town last night, the bride hav-
ing crawled out the window of her
room to make the escape. She also
swore she was 18 when only 17. They
are at the home of the grooms parents.
The Democrat wishes them happiness.
The Cemetery Association will meet
tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the
Methodist church. All members urged
to be present.
J. Rex Beeman, a brother of Ray
Beeman, who is an employe of the
Altus News, has been in the city sev-
eral days. While here he did some
decorating and sign writing for the big
department store of Garrison-Dunlap-
VValker Co., which cannot be excelled
in or outside the large cities. Mr. Bee-
man is certainly an artist in his line
and the merchants of Altus would do
well if they could, to club together and
have Mr. Beeman remain in this city to
do their decorating.
J. H. Preston, with the Dorchester
Printing Co., of Dallas is in the city
today.
Wil Medford, of Lawton, is in the
city today.
E. F. Gresthouse, of Quanah, was
here today.
Jno. R. Daniel, of Mangum, is in the
city. Mr. Daniel will open an abstract
office here the first of May.
V. T. Williamson, who has been
solicited by bis friends to maek the
race for alderman in the 2d Ward,
requests us to announce that, unde
no circumstances will he accept th
po pition. He, however, at the sam
time thanks his friends for their ef-
forts in his .behalf. T.he Democrat
suggests that J. B. Morris would
make a number one alderman for
this Ward, having had experience in
a similar position in a large town in
Texas. Why not elect .Worrsi?

Mr. and Mrs. L. Walker who have

Mrs. Maud Dillinger, of Olustee, was |
here last night attending tbe bedside of
her sister, Mrs. Van Matre, who is very
ill with appendicitis.
S. K. Sparks and J. E. Hill, both of
Headrick, attended the JOdd Fellows
encampment here last night.
BLAIR
The best Blair item is a Jackson
county item—the fine rain. The large
grain crop clear of weeds and unhnrt
by insects, and the early alfalfa yield
about ready for the sickle. This on
many farms contiguous to Blair means
that business will hum this spring. It
hums now.
Messrs. Huber, father and son, of
the Blair State Bank, are building two
nice frame residences. They will put
in their own light system.
Messrs. Clark and Johnson have com-
pleted their new hay and coal bam.
Theirs is a splendid addition to Blair's
business enterprises.
Agent Stout of the Orient is expect-
ing work to begin on the new depot in
a few days. He is now cramped in a
narrow box car with shack adjoining.
There is talk of a large up-to-date
brick school house. It will probably
materialize in time for a fall term. The
school is graded hiorh. Prof. Pope is
proud of his pupils, and the town is
proud of Pope.
Strangers on the street are in evi-
dence daily. The boarding houses are
crowded. Every business is flourishing,
new families moving in; many fingers
point to a roseate future.
ELMER.
Born on the 7th. inst., a daughter,
to Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Wheeler. Both
mother and babe are doing well.
A much needed rain has fallen for

Cecil Motherell is convalesent after
an attack of Typhoid fever.
Mr. Jim Vernon of the firm of

The Orient track has been so
weakened by the recent rains that
the engine turned over between here
and Altus.

gone altogether, but may return a-
gain; at any rate he could visit
there. So cheer up, don't look so
lonesome, there may be better days
