Humor From British Tar.
An incident Illustrative of the quiet
humor of the British tar la thus de-
scribed :
In Modros harbor, In the eastern
Mediterranean, a coxswain of the navy
ran his picket boat Into a trawler, and,
knowing his error, listened with dis-
ciplinary patience while the Irate mas-
ter expressed his views on royal naval
picket boats ln a wealth of Invective.
The silent coxswain pushed off, but,
passing under the stern of the trawler,
looked up at one of the crew and
shouted :
"What do you feed your old man on?
Acid drops?"—London Tit-Bits.

mand great cause for concern.
In a fierce attack between Smorgon
and Krovo the Russians drove a wedge
Into the German line to a depth of two
miles at various places, and took more
than 1,000 prisoners.
French Holding Their Own.
Grand Headquarters of the French
Army ln France.—The watchword of
the French troops at Verdun—'"they}
shall not pass"—has applied equally
to the Champagne, and the French
showed the crown prince's army that
the Chemin Des Dames was a closed
road to it. Sunday the Germans made
in grqat force their fortieth attempt
since the French captured Craonne,
May 4, to get possession of the famous
road. This effort was one of their big-
gest offensive movements since Ver-
dun.
The gain of a few hundred yards of
a front line trench, which Is all that
remains in German hands, appears
small compensation for the fierce fight-
ing in the forty attacks of the last I
ten weeks, during which conservative
estimates place German losses near
the Chemln-Des Dames alone ln aix
figures.
