One of the moat-syllabled nutnes of
towns along the Maine coast Is lifi-
marlscotta. Tested by standards of
sight or sound, the name is unique.
The gazetteer records nothing like it
Id other states or in other lauds. When
the name was coined Hie die was
thrown away. Nor is its namo the
only unique feature of the town. It
Is better known in.Haiti than Cam-
bridge, Mass.. or Mount Washington,

that a 16-foot gate I* to be built, and
to do so we build the gate, (as shown),
all In one piece. It is then set ly place
and the four hinges are made fast, the
post well tamped, and the gate Is then
sawed In two in the center (as shown
>t A).
This method will bring both gates
on a line, and ihipy will be sure to
close evenly. It Is a good plan to place
the two center sldepleces about one-
half inch apart, and make two saw
cuts, cutting out the extra half-Inch
which will prevent the rain from, swell-
ing the gate, which may prevent it*
closing evenly.

Piping -u< h as Is mad* use of fur
conducting air, water, ateam or bot wa-
ter Is frequently burled in tb* wall,
wltb nothing to Indicate Its presence,
so that when repairs are necessary it
Is often a difficult matter to ascertain
the location of these conduits. Very
often this is accomplished only by tear-
ing out the plaster and doing consider-
able damage to the property. A recent-
ly patented electric method for locating
the pipes is simply a special applica-
tion of the well-known Induction bal-
ance principle. A convenient apparatus
Is made up, consisting of two sets of
colls placed on ends of a magnet bar.
One set of coils receives alternating or
vibratory current from a suitable
source, and the other colls are connect-
ed to a telephone. The balance is first
established so that no sound Is heard
In the telephone. When the device
comes near the metal piping this dis-
turbs the balance and a sound Is beard.
It is thus an easy matter to find thi
exact position of the pipes and to reach
them with less damage to the wall.
