The people of Altus, snd many
from other towns and country
attenoed the two days debate be-
tweenW C. Witcher, democrat
and O. E. Enfield, socialist at
the court house Monday and
Tuesday. Both of the speakers
are Elders of the Christian
church- and both art able speak-
ers,!
The subject for Monday was:
'Socialism as adopted by the
socialist of of America ia funda-
mentally right and in accord
with the ethics of Christianity."
Affirmed by O. E. Enfield and
denied by W. C. Witcher. There
were two discuasions of this sub-
ject by each of the speakers
Monday
On Tuesday the subject was:
"Socialism is fundamentally
wrong and therefore a menace
to both church and state " Af-
firmed by W. C. Witcher, and
denied by O E. Enfield.
Good audiences attended all
meetings and enjoyed the speak-
ing. As usufel, in such discuss-
ions, adherents of each of the
political parties claimed that their
man was victorious. But one
of the most strenuous socialists
here, admitted to us that the
Democratic speaker had the best
of the argument Monday, but
claimed that their speaker had
the best of it Tuesday Now, if
the socialist admit that the Dem-
ocratic speaker had the best of it
Monday, they must admit that
he also had the best of it Tues-
dsy, for the subject Tuesday
was the same as that of Monday,
only conversely stated, which
only change the wording of the
subject, so as to make the affir
mative speaker of Mondav the
negative speaker of Tuesday.
We believe that any unbiased
listener of the discussions will ad
mit that Witcher carried Enfield
to a thorough and complete
cleaning. Witcher quoted from
the standard authors on the so-
cialist dogmas showing that the
foundation was detrimental to
society, fundamentally wrong
and ethically against Christiani-
ty. He challenged Enfield to
defend socialism as propagated
by their ablest authors and writ-
ers. But Enfield failed and nev-
er did so. He chose rather, as
all socialists speakers do, to deal
in generalities, denounce the
Democratic party, and pour out
their solicitude for the laborer
and the poor of the country, and
denounce capitalism. Witcher
'dared" him to defend socialiam
aspropogatod by their writers
and authors, but Enfield evaded
and produced no arguments that
the dogmas of socialism were
fundamentally right or in accord
with the ethics of Christianty.
As an evidence that Witcher
did Enfield and exposed the fali-
cy of socialism, men who have
been claiming to be socialist will
vote the Democratic ticket this
year, but we have heard of no
Democrat that will be a socialist
after hearing the debate.

Cowden Pleads Guilty
J. J. Cowden plead guilty in
the district court last week to
the charge of stealing eleven
bales of cotton and was given a
term in the reformatory at Gran-
ite.
Cowden was the Frisco agent
at Headrick. He stole 11 bales
of cotton from a car and shipped
it and burned the car on the side-
track. It was suspicioned that
somthing was wrong, and Judge
W. T. McConnell, assistant state
fire marshal, came over from
Oklahoma City, and began to in-
vestigate He developed evidence
that warranted the arrest of
Cowden He had the facts so
well in hand that Cowden con-
could hide his crime But Mc-
Connell had the deadwood on
him, and now he fills a fellon's
cell in the reformatory. The
cotton was recoved at Fort
Worth.
We are glad that Mc did such
clever work on this case

First Monday
There was a good crowd in the
city Monday, notwithstanding
the weather was disagreeble,
and that many of the people had
attended the four-days school
and athletic meet here last week.
The usual programs of horse
trading, sales of stock and other
things were the order of the day.
The debate between Witcher,
democrat, and Enfield, socialist,
drew large crowds, and they all
seemed to enjoy Altus holiday,
