take tliis opportunity to state th.it
the papei is a permanent fixture
to take care of tlx school land
lessees as long as there is one in
existence and then take care of
equally as paramount issues.
The present owners bought •'
plant and paper for 53,500 that
has been in continuous existence
for eleven years. They have since
bought £1,500 worth of type and
job fixtures to do .ill kinds of le-
gal, stationery and job printing.
The;' have the best job printer
and intend to turn out the most
artistic and fancy work in the ter-
ritory.
The paper has come to st.iv and
fill that want in the public an
organ, that while other powerful
sheets are forwarding their own
commercial schemes and polili
cians their political ambitions, it
will stand up for the claims of the
people.
There has never been such a
paper published .it the capital of
the territory and the capital is
the only place where the peoples'
interests can lie taken care of, for
here is the place where all the
legislative grafts and public con
tracts are consumated. There has
been but one voice in the city of
Guthrie even if there are two
newspapers and tlia one voice
has always been for the benefit of
the two-papers-in-one.
If the people, at large over the
territory, desire to know the real
facts of legislative action and oth
ers, and all the news of all the de
partments of government of the
territory they had better subscri
be for the State Register. Though
it comes out hut once a week, the
unbiased truth will be told that
much oftener than it is now. This
has been needed for a lou;, time
in this territory. There has nev
been an independent newspape
published that its self interest
was not always greater than th
puclic interest in any question
and that it did not deceive the
public in presenting Us own pri
vate benefit as though it was the
benefit of the public.
Wan this issue the immediate
part is.111 political considerations
that tin school land lessees may
differ or, are at end. After this
they will agree on the one thing,
the ti.1 ilierance of the welfare of
the general public. The State
Register intends to inform them
011 ail matters of public legisla-
tion, public contracts md any and
all matters 111 the solution of ter
ritorial expenditures.
YOl) HOB UP WRONO, BOB.
On geiviral principles, the State
Register believes Hob Neff means
well. The editor of this paper
knew him in Kansas. But Bob is
a humorist. If he had stuck to
his profession lie would have been
one of the great comedians of the
country, lie is a born harlequin
clown. If he had lived during
Shakespear. 's time lie would have
made fame -is .1 court fool to I leii-
ry the seventh, for he can mimic
other men's wisdom with greater
humor than Jacques in " Much A-
do About Nothing" hecanh-ok
wise without av,ii[4 anything.
Hut when Hob comes to play
with the stall snicn lie tails down.
Ilis wires cross in getting inloi
niation, his tacts "pi" 011 his com-
posing table, and lu> ideas are
b'as.d on suppositions. In com-
menting on sections 9 and 10 of
the statehood bill, dealing with
the mannct of leasing school land
Hob used an incorrect version of
the bill and has stu:k to his infor-
mation ever since. He Knows
that the school land lessees will
have pay for their improvement
VV. T. Little was in Washing-1
ton when the statehood bill was
being drafted and suggested the
clause giving preference rights
to the lessees. lie states that
the intent of the bill is that the
lessees shall get pay for their im-
provements, and although it
seems like folly to have to give
any more proof, this is another
evidence that they will get pay
Hird McGuire is going to car-
ry the three new counties. A
prominent democrat from ( 0111-
anche county made the state-
ment that untold numbers of Tex-
as democrats had sold out and
moved back to the slate 1 his,
with the fact that it has been
found out that the three counties
really nev er wore democratic, as-
sures the election of Hird Mc-
Guire.

It is interesting how many
Guthrie men are candidates for
senator, congressman or governor
under statehood. Some of them
stand as much chance of being
nominated, to say nothing of el-
ection, as a last years birds' nest
has of having chiterlings,
Taking the newspapers of the
territory for granted these days,
when there is nothing in them but
politics, from the way each side
accuses the other the conclusion
is forced that the leading citizens
are the biggest rogue--, and horse-
thievs in the world. This is the
logic of the situation if both sides
are right.
