Fern wood
Harvest is here.
We are having several nice showers
but we wish them to cease for harvest
days.
Sunday school every Sunday and preac-
ing second and fourth Sundays in each
month at Fern wood.
Mrs. Emline Shaaf left Saturday June
29 for LeRoy Kans. after a two months
visit with her son Clinton Shaaf of
Fernwood. She thought Heaver alright
and expects to return in the fall to spend
the winter here.
Little Lea Gordanier has the measles
but is getting along nicely.
Quite a few new buildings in our
neighborhood lately.
Mrs. Ida Mettler has had a stable
built, connected to the granary.
We are very much surprised to learn of
the hail and lightning so near our vicinity
that did so much damage just northeast
of here we hope the hail storms are end-
ed.
Mrs. Ida Mettler was in Hooker Satur-
day.
Time.Yet lor Cowpeas
Cowpeas may bo planted as late
as August first. They may not
produce a profitable crop of seed
when planted so late, but they will
furnish excellent September pas-
ture and a large amount of veget-
able matter which will make the
soil glad when worked into it. The
acreage of cowpeas in Oklahoma
this year, as has been the ease for
the last three years, has been lim-
ited only by the amount of seed
obtainable. This repeated short-
age of cowpea seed should encour-
age more people to go to some
effort to save a good supply. Har-
vested in the most expensive man-
ner, cow pea seed may be saved at
an expense of less than one dollar
per bushel and it is practically
certain to bring more than two
dollars per bushel jiext year.
Trees Make Value
Hie writer made a trip to Ne-
braska a short time ago and had a
chance to observe the transforma-
tions of over 20 years in that sec-
tion of the country. One of the
notable changes was the presence
of trees. Nebraska was a treeless
plain as it dwells in our memory,
but as it appears today there are
forest and fruit trees on every
farm and the towns arc a cool
shady grove at this time of the
year.
The first trees planted were box-
elders and cottonwood. Both
kinds did well the cottonwoods
outgrowing the elders, but there
camo some dry years. In 1903
1904 the cottonwoods nearly ajl
.died. The boxelders lived through
and are now fine shade trees.
Many other kinds have been
planted since and are doing well.
Fruit trees have done well, es-
pecially so where they wero pro-
tected by hedge rows or groves of
other trees.
We could not help thinking as
we passed along enjoying tjiese
\ trees of the transformation that
is to be wrought here in .Beaver
by the large number of trees that
have been set out. It takes but
a little to set a tree—it may mean
much. All things great and
grand are made up of littles.
In conclusion we are reminded of
the following quotation we used in
a school essay years ago:
"Who does his duty is a question
too complex to be solved by
me,
But he, I venture the suggestion,
docs part of his who plants a
tree."
Preparation for Wheat
Oklahoma will always produce
considerable wheat. Many will
drop it entirely because of the
work,of the green bugs this year
and they will miss the pasture
next winter and wish they had it.
During July is the time to give
the ground proper preparation for
sowing the crop in September and
October. Deep, early plowing,
followed by frequent harrowing to
firm the soil and hold moisture, as
well as to kill weeds and grass,
