I Baxter, territorial superintendent,
j First grade teachers are scarce, and
the schools are beginning to demand
| a better grade of teachers, and are
| willing to pay the salaries of first j
1 grade teachers. Th' is especially
true in the western counties. There
' is a need of about 5,600 teachers in
I Oklahoma. The normal schools are
| turning out but from sixty to seventy !
teachers each yeur. but old teachers
are dropping out of the ranks faster
I than new ones are coining in. Salar
les from 950 to 970 per month are
I paid for first grade teachers.
Steps Taken by the Board of Health
to Prevent Yellow Fever
MUSKOGEE: The Muskogee board j
of health has decided to establish a
rigid quarantine against the towns
| in the south now stricken with yellow!
fever. A committee will meet each j
tialn. which will be stopped at the
1 city limits, and Inspect the passen-
gers. Any person from the Infected i
localities will not be allowed to leav •
the train at Muskogee unless he |m>b

School Land Lessee May Have Hi®
Lease Revoked
GUTHRIE: Twenty five walnut
logs were confiscated by the school
land department, which had been cut
from a school land section of land
and sold to a sewing machine manu-
facturing company. Some of the most
valuable walnut timber In the terri-
tory Is located on a school land claim.
Its removal Is not permitted by the
department. The sheriff's office at
Stroud was notified that the logs
were being taken away Special Agent
Madden of the school land depart-
ment and Deptuy Sheriff Lilly found
twenty-five logs ni the railway sta
tlon. ready to he loaded on the train
at Stroud. They took nossession of
the property Immediately.
The purchasers were not arrested,
hut the case comes under the Jurisdic-
tion of the department of the inter
lor, and may be taken up by that de-
partment.
Five more logs were found cut on
the same claim, and the lessee has
been summoned before the hoard, and
his lease may be revokt d. The value
of the logs was at least or $100, 1
and probably a grent deal more than i
that. |
Bond Election at Marlow
MARLOW: The council has
called a special election for Septem- j
her 12 to vote upon the Issuance of
$20,000 bonds f r the construction <>f j
a waterworks system. A poll of tho
voters Indicates that the bonds will
be voted.
There is nothing so painful ns the
efforts of some men to be funny.
A New Hotel for Lawton
LAWTON: A stock company Is
being organized for tho purpose of
building a three-story brick hotel. The
hotel will be modern in every way.
The promoters of the scheme are
mostly Lawton nun. The capital
•tock will be $50,000, and $ HI ,000 has
been subscribed.
CRUELTY TO CHILDREN
Superintendent of Orphans' Home Is
Fined for Abuse
GUTHRIE: The Rev. Noah Wlckam
superintendent of the orphans' home
at Guthrie, was fined $1 and costs In
the probate court for cruelty to chll
dren. The law under which ho was
fined was one which Wlckam himself
wrote and which wa.f passed by the
last legislature. He was the first
person to he tried uncer the law
While Wlckam was on his way
home from court, late at night, ho
was pelted with stale eggs by a crow
of Indignant citizens. The Rev Mr
Ross of Stillwater was with Wlckam,
and he was bedaubed also.
The testimony 1n the case against
Wlckam showed that he had adopted
the Squeers method of Instruction,
and sometimes whipped children for
half an hour at a time. Mary wit-
nesses testified that they heard chil-
dren under his care begging for !
mercy. One girl testified that sh ■ hail 1
st en a boy burned by Wlckam with a
hot poker.
