The Time is Short
I have no mortgage upon long lif«.
The number of my years to come is
hidden in the book of fate. 1 may
live another decade. 1 may be called
tonight. In either case the time is
short.
Very well, then 1 will find out what
are the essentials and devote myself
to them. And I will not allow my-
self to worry over the non-essentials
I will seek what is worth while; and
trifling things, that after all make no
matter, I will let go to grass.
If I am to have but ten minutes at
the lunch counter I will take only the
best foods. I have no time for olives
and radishes.
The time is short!
I can't have everything. 1 must
pick out what is the most valuable.
The time is short!
I have no time for low self-indul-
gence, for drunkenness nor lewdness,
for the hot excesses that bring long
pains. Why should I spend a good
part of my little time in regret? I
will select the pleasures that leave
pleasureable memories, the sweets
that leave a good taste in the mouth.
I will eat what is wholesome at life's
table.
Vices are pleasant, doubtless.
Opium .and alcohol have their de-
lights. Only I have no time. I must
choose pleasures that remain.
The time is short!
I have no time for grudges, no
time for hates, no time for ven-
geance. To get satisfaction from
such things one would have to live
a thousand years. I have but few.
The time is short!
Love is worth while, I know; both
now whilst we are together, and to-
morrow when one of us shall be
away.
Love is good everlastingly; in ant.c-
ipation, in realization, in recollection;
I will crowd all possible love into my
brief space.
The time is short!
I will make every day an epoch of
happiness. Every morning when I
wake up I will be cheerful; it nay be
mv last. Every m?al shall be a sac-
rament; we may not meet again. My
business shall receive my best en-
deavor and all who deal with me
shall feel they have met an honest
man.
I will enjoy my little children. Be-
fore long they will be babies no more.
I will make their childhood a white
tower of memory, both far them and
me.
I will be very thoughtful of the ol1
people at my fireside. They will
not be here very long. Every day
must count.
I will not wait for ideal friends,
who may never come to me, but will
cultivate the friends fate has sent me.
I will try to appreciate, understand
and love them to the full. I may not
get others.
I will take things as they are, and
not crucify myself whining for
thiners as I think they ought to be.
The time is short!
Let me so use my few days and
years that when I am gone the pass-
ers-by may read upon my headstone;
"Ich habe gelebt und geliebet—I
have lived and loved."
For the time is short.—Dr. Crane.

Gasoline Plus Kerosene
Don't tell me that you haven't
been worrying about the swift rise in
the price of gasoline—for everybody
who owns an engine is 'doin' it,' "
said Mr. C. F. Field, manager of the
Rawleigh Manufacturing Co., when
the writer saw him at Freeport the
other day.
"Well, Mr. Field, you don't seem
to be very much worried yourself. I
should think, with all the engines
you use here to run your factory
that it would be a pretty serious
problem to supply enough gasoline to
keen them all going."
We don't," he said, with a quiz-
zical smile. That's why I'm not so
worried as I might be. Wc found
that if we mix gasoline and kerosene,
half and half, and stir it up well,
that the engines will run on that
fuel 'fine as silk.' "
"Try it yourself."
But Mr. Field, will an engine start
all right on such a mixture?" we
asked.
"Yes," he replied. "It'll start on
it, but on a cold morning you'll
probably have to use a little gasoline
straight to pet her going and warmed
up—after th.kt she 1 run on half and
half as long as you want her to."

Hugh., on Reunited Party
"I come to you as the spokesman
of a reunited party. We have said
that it was reunited; we have believed
it was reunited; we have devoutly
hoped it was reunited. Now, Maine
proves that it is reunited. I am glad
to speak for the reunited Republican
party because it is a great liberal
party. It started as a liberal party;
its best traditions are those of a lib-
eral party. And today it faces the
future with a truly national outlook

SPECIAL EVENTS AT ROUND UP
Best Talent in the United States to
Be at the Cowboy's Roundup
at Tucumcari
Some of the best bronco busters in
the world will enter the contests in
the first annual Cowboy's Roundup to
be held in Tucumcari, October 3, 4
and 5. The executive comittee has
arranged an additional event, to be
known as a Ladies' Bronc Riding
Contest, with a purse of $100.00.
Prairie Lillie Allen has wired
that she will come and enter this con-
test. She recently won the world's
championship title for lady bronc
riders in New York City in the
Stampede, and Sept. 7, of this year,
won the Southwestern championship
at Garden City, Kansas. Her hus-
band, Slim Allen, also, will be here.
He is famous as a bronc rider, fancy
roper, and steer bull-dogger.
Thad Pippen, who broke the world's
record five seconds in the relay race
at Las Vegas will enter the relay race
in Tucumcari. His time at Las Vegas
was two miles in four minutes, five
seconds. A contract has been closed
with "Bugger-Red" to bull-dog
steers each day from the hood of an
automobile. Bugger-Red is well
known all over Cowboy Lar.d as an
expert rider, roper and bull-dogger.
Texas Jack, another famous bronc
buster, has sent word that he will bo
here.
The Amarillo Concert Band has
been engaged to furnish the music
during the Roundup and those who
are in a position to have knowledge
state that these musicians are cer-
tainly there with all the latest pop-
ular music, love stuff and rag time,
and also know how to handle classical
music. They will play a concert on
the streets in the morning, and play
all afternoon on the grounds during
the contests. The portable band
stand will be moved to the center of
the city and a concert will be played
at Second and Main each evening at
8 o'clock.
Arrangements are being made for
a boxing contest to be held in the
opera house the evening of October
4 th. Efforts are being made to
match Tommy Livingston of El Faso
with Frank Gonrales of Denver, in a
ten round exhibition, and if these
men are not secured some other good
men will be obtained.
