Broom corn continues to com*
town at the rate of about l<*) loads a
day. So far as quanity is concerned
this la not more than has U'en mar-
keted informer years, but the qual-
ity, owing to better care and facilities
in handling is much lietter. The
price is also higher than usual and
the amount of money received for this
year's crop will probably lie at least
a third more than has l>een received
in time past.-Liberal Independent
The arrival of the first "broom
corn" train was witnessed by a large
crowd of people Saturday afternoon.
The train was composed of an engint
ami several wagon loads of broom
corn and came via the overland rout*
from C. S. Peck's farm In Kansas. Mr
Peck farms on a lart^ scale und his
broom corn train which brought
in fourteen tons represented only
about half his crop. Several sna|
„hots of the train were taken and wt
hope to use one on our front page if
they develop nicely. When It comes
to up to date methods of handling
farm products Tyrone takes the lead
-Tyrone Observer.
Wni. Goto bed holds first place for
obtaining the greatest results
farming one-half acre of ground
which netted him Mr. Goto
lied tried the Hurrell Gem pink meat
ed cantaloupe and the above is the
result. He received from «0 eenti
l er crate of twelve melons to *1.-
per crate for all he shipped and he
did not get the melons in on the early
market either on account of the hail
last spring. Off of one-half acre
melons which Mr. Gotobed raised
and shipped he realised $2S8.00 nei
and he got $390.00 worth of seed in
addition. This was done from just
one-half pound of seed. Mr. Goto-
bed and A. C. Murphy have been
trying to get others interested in
this kind of melon but were unable to
do so this year, but there is little
doubt but that the farmers will be
glad enough to raise this grade of
melon when they realize the great
profit to lie gained from it. We
give at the end of this article a let-
ter written to Mr. Gotobed by H.
Woods and company, of Chicago,
which will be of interest to all melon
growers. The writer saw letters from
each of the firms to whioh Mr. Goto-
bed shipped his melons and everyone
praised them very highly and com-
mended Mr. Gotobed upon his suc-
cess in raising such an extra good
grade of melons many of them stat-
ing that these melons had a lietter
flavor than those raised at Rocky
Ford, Colorado. Anyone wishing to
raise this kind of melons can get
seed at the Citizens bank at the small
price of 13.00 per pound. Mr. Goto-
l>ed paid $5.00 per pound for the seed
he used this season. These figures
may appear to l e rather large but
writer saw the returns for these
melons anil knows them to 1*' correct.
The H. Woods Company, agrees to
furnish crates, labels and fine paper
wrappers for the melons, next year to
all who will raise this species of mel-
ons, and as there are only 200 acres
wanted, those who are interested had
better not put off making your ar-
rangements too long.—Hooker Repub-
lican.
H. P. Fluhart, who took a drive
through Texas county, last week
went home and wrote the follow-
ing: "We recently had occasion to
make a drive through different parts
of Heaver county, or what will be
Tex as county when we get statehood
and It is hard to believe that the
improvements all have lieen made In
four short years. Four years ago all
this vast area of rich land was
great prairie over which the occa-
sional traveler and the large herds
of cattle were the only trespassers
Now you find great fields of all kinds
of crops and ground broken for next
year's wheat crop, and you will find
fine farm houses and large barns
and granaries replacing the shacks
and dugouts and the best of It all Is
that these Improvements are the
results of good crops. Another good
healthy condition Is the Interest our
citizens are taking In the education
of their children. In districts where
It Is Impossible to sell bonds to build
a school house and furnish It, the
metnliers of those districts are putting
up uhe money and paying for these
Improvements themselves, and as
fa«t as the pupils get ready for it
they are sending them oft to one of the
