Hooker and Vicinity
Mrs. D. D. Boyd returned Wednes-
day from a visit to Missouri.
Frank Hippie, manager of the Lib-
eral Elevator Co. was in town Wednes-
day .
Miss Maggie Murphy started yester-
day for a visit to her parents and old
friends at Tonkawa. Ok la.
Next Tuesday at two o'clock is the
time set for the adjourned session of
the school meeting. Be at tl.ie school
house and help fix things up right.
E. E. Hearne sent in a sample stall;
of corn the other day by J. W. Isbell
rural carrier, which if it had not been
still fresh would have made us declare
he had been to Illinois to pull it.
There will be a socialist meeting
at the Dague school house tomorrow
evening, Aug. 8th. Wm. Quesse will
address the meeting and explain the
subject of Socialism. Everybody in-
vited.
Miss Minnie Smith, who had been
visitinv her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.
S. Smith, who live six miles north
east of town, for about ten days, re-
turned to Coluwater, Kans., last Sat-
urday.
Joe. Gotobed brought in some stalks
of corn Saturday that looks like he
had been staying up nights to irrigate
a hill or two, but he declares he has
about fifteen acres like the sample. It
is putting out four or five ears to the
.-•talk.
D. B. AlmoDd went to Dalhart
Thursday to help eseort his baby
home after its visit in Texas. This
was a very thoughtful act of Mr. Al-
mond as the baby was only accompa-
nied by its mother, grandmother and
grandfather.
The Hooker ball team is going to
Stratford, Tex., Sunday to play the
nine there two games. One will be
Sunday afternoon and the other Mon-
day morning.
I. F. Moon and wife are enjoying a
visit from their son, Geo. F. Moon of
Kansas City. Mr. Moon puts in his
time for the Metropolitan Railway and
has come here to spend his vacation
away from the hurry of the city.
We have been requested to announce
to the people of Advance township
that the assessor, Mr. Booher, wishes
it understood among the people that
the raise of 50 per cent in assessment
was made by the county commissioners
and not by him.
Henry C. Fran/ and family started
for Goessel, Kan., where they will re-
side in the future. Mr. Franz was one
of our good substantial German farm-
ers and we hate to lose him, but con-
sole ourselves with the thought that
he will soon be back. He will not
find the end of the rainbow in Kansas.
B. Schaapveld was in Saturday to
pay his subscription and tell us how
fine the ground was working after the
rain. This is his first year here from
Iowa but he is not in the least bluffed
by the dry spell we have had and says
he is well pleased with the country and
the prospects and would like to see
some more of those Iowa people who
have been "drowned out in this
tine climate.
D. J. Hiebert has been negotiating
for some time for the Wm. Box lot
just east of Bob's store and succeeded
in getting the deal closed last week.
He has already begun work digging
a cellar and will erect a 25x<j<) brick
building right away. It is his inten-
tion to put in a stock of dry goods
when he gets the building completed.
