Apples grown In Tasmania, south
of Australia, are shipped 11,000 miles
to British markets, and yet they pay
eo well that Tasmania apple orchards
have sold as high as $1,100 an acre.
Five hundred dollars au acre is a
modest valuation.
Church attendance in rural districts,
it is said, is greatly decreased by the
prevailing "motor fever.'' The ever-
increasing use of the automobile for
Sunday touring on country roads ban-
ishes the church-goer who drives with
his family to church, for the horso is
apt to lake fright and life become
thereby endangered.

Judges on Their Dignity.
The ceremony of the United State*
supreme court judges marching from
their robing room across the corridor
to take their seats on the bench,
which occurs at hieii noon every week
day while the court is holding session,
is always a matter of Interest to the
average visitor at the capitol. Every
day there is a smnll crowd waiting to
see the stately procession. The other
day Justice Moody, as the youngest
member of the august body, brought
up the rear. A flicker of a smile ap-
peared on his face as he noted the
black-robed figures ahead of him, but
it passed away instantly and he be-
came as solemn aud grave as th«
others.

A London medical journal suggests
that for the sake of safety steps of
stairways should be of standard size,
of uniform height and breadth the
world over, and wide enough to take
the whole foot. An equally necessary
reform is the removal of the extra
step, which In the dark one thinks is
not there, to that other place where
in the dark one thinks there is a
step, and find only unsustaiiiing air.
The smokeless condition in Berlin
is ascribed to the preponderant use
of smokeless fuel, in the form of coke
and briquettes, the skillful, scientific
construction of boiler furnaces and
chimneys and finally to the high
Stan 'ai d of skill taught and enforced
anong firemen who stoke furnaces
with coal for steam and other pur-
poses. Before a man can assume
such a charge in Berlin he must be
taught the theory and practice of
economical, scientific firing.
The extraordinary popularity of fine
wh'te goods this summer makes the
choice of Starch a ma ter of gre^t im-
portance. Defiance Starch, being fret;
from all injurious chemicals, is the
only one which is safe to use on fine
fabrics. Its great strength as a st'ff-
ener makes half the usual quantity of
Starch necessary, with the result of
perfect finish, equal to that when the
goods were new.
SAID WOMEN MARRIED HIM.
The French have a neat way of
showing disfavor. When Boni de Cas
tellane, who is a member of the house
of deputies, ascended the tribune lo
make a speech, liaif of his fellow-
members arose and left the chamber,
administering such a public snub as
has seldom been inflicted. Boni has
a reputation as a duelist, but it is
doubtful if he will feel impelled to
challenge every manly man who took
such an opportunity to express an
opinion of Castellane's conduct.
Sir Patrick ManBon. in Ills recent
lectures on tropical diseases, althou'-h
accepting the theory that the only
mode of transmission of marsh, or ma-
larial, fever Is through the bite of the
Anopheles mosiuito, ad'ls the state
ment, which will -probably be new to
most readers, that the mosquitoes are
capable of becoming infected by ab-
sorbing the blood not merely of
human patients, but also of anthro-
poid apes, and perhaps even of vari-
ous other mammals, which, in an evo
lutionary sense, are related to man.
Remarkable Excuse Put Forward b;
French Bigamist.
At Versailles, France, recently J
kaker was tried on a charge of pol.vg
imy, having married five women
who are living and undlvorced. Thr
pentagamist's defense was that ht
had not married the women; they hat'
married him. When they proposed
he had not the courage to say no
Neither money nor love, he said, had
prompted his nuptials; he was tht
Tictim of the stronger wills of his
successive spouses. Of the 3ve wives
three appeared as witnesses, but did
not prosecute, saying that their com-
mon husband was a toper of whom
they were glad to get rid. He was
icquitted—on what ground does not
appear. As all the years, in which
the multiplex husband took wives
were leap years except 1881, in which
!t would seem that in four out of
the five cases the women had the
right to propose. But the man had
the right, even in the leap years, to
decline, and it was up to him at least
to explain to his fair suitors that he
was engaged. To establish the prin-
ciple that a man is not responsible
for the ntimber of his wives unless
he himself does the courting, would
be plainly against public policy. If
"Barkis is willin'," that at once puts
all the responsibility on him,

WOMEN S'siFrES
Many women suffer in silence and
drift a long from bad lo worse, know-
ing well that they ought to have
immediate assistance.
liow many women do you know
who are perfectly well and strong?
'1 hecau.se may be easily traced to
some feminine derangement which
manifests it.-elf in depression of
spirits, reluctance to go anywhere
or do anything, backache, dragging
sensations, flutulency, nervousness,
and sleeplessness.
These symptoms are but warnings
that there is danger ahead, and un-
less heeded, a life of suffering or a
serious operation is the inevitable
result. The best remedy for all
these symptoms is
Lydia E. Pinkham'sVegetable Compound
made from native roots and herbs. No other medicine in the country lias
received such widespread and unqualified endorsement. No other medi-
cine has such a record of cures of female ills.
Miss .1. F. Walsh, of 328 W. 3Gth St., New York City, writes:—"Lydia
E Pinkham's Vegetable Compound has been of inestimable value in
restoring my health. I suffered from female illness which caused
dreadful headaches, dizziness, and dull pains in my back, but your
medicine soon brought about a change in my general condition, built
me up and made me perfectly well." , . ,
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound cures Female Complaints,
such as Backache, Falling and Displacements. Inflammation and Ulcera-
tion. and organic diseases. It is iuvaluaWe in preparing for child-birth
and during the Change of Life. Itcures Nervous Prostration, Headache,
(Jeneral Debility, and invigorates the whole system.

Makes Trouble for People with Weak
Intestinal Digestion.
A lady in a Wis. town employed a
physician who instructed her not to
eat white bread for two years. She
tells the details of her sickness and
she certainly was a sick woman.
"In the year 1887 I gave out from
overwork, and until 1901 I remained
an invalid in bed a great part of the
time. Had different doctors but noth-
ing seemed to help. I suffered from
cerebro spinal congestion, female trou-
ble and serious stomach and bowel
trouble. My husband called a new
doctor and after having gone without
any food for 10 days the doctor or-
dered Grape-Nuts for me. I could eat
the new food from the very first
mouthful. The doctor kept me on
Grape-Nuts and the only medicine
was a little glycerine to heal the
alimentary canal.
"When I was up again doctor told
mo to eat Grape-Nuts twice a day and
no white bread for two years. I got
well in good time and have gained in
strength so I can do my own work
again.
"My brain has been helped so much, I
and I know that the Grape-Nuts food (
did this, too. I found I had been j
made ill because I was not fed right. |
that is I did not properly digest white
bread and some other food I tried to
live on.
"I have never been without Grape-
Nuts food since and eat it every day.
