A Merchant's Duty
to His Town.
All aae agreed to the propo-
Hition that a town that is enter-
prising. its streets and sidewalks
carefully kept, its schools and
churches commodious and well
ti.no looked after, its business houses
attractive, inside and out, and its
approaches always in good re-
pair, is the town which "draws
trade from miles around, while
other neighboring t >wns that are
slovenly and slipshod will fall
into deserved oblivion.
But it takes time and money
to transform a town. This work
will not do itself. The merchant
is the man, not only to talk a-
hout the desirability of the bet-
ter condition, but to give of hin
time and means to bnng it about.
It is his duty to his town as well
as to himself. In fact he should |
lead in the movement It will
take the co-operation of practi-
cally all the citizens to fully ac-
complish the desired result, and
where it has been neglected for
years it often is downright hard
work to stir up an interest; but
it should be done, and must be
done if the town is to grow, or
even maintain its present status;
for other towns are catching the
spirit of improvement and will
soon be drawing away the trade
that naturally is tributary to it.
But t^ten this work is accom-
plished so gradually as to be
almost unnoticeable. Sometimes
it may be the influence of a bin-
gle householder who loves beau-
ty and has intelligence to fix up
his home attractively, inside and j
out. lie buys a lawn mower
and keeps his grass closley cutj
and attractive, keeps his side- I
walks in good repair and
fences, if he nas them; or, per
haps, he tears out his fence and 30"tf-
grades up his lawn and k eps it I —
in trim, so that the flowers and
shrubbery and trees, and the
house itself will sh jw to better
advantage. His next door neigh-
bor, not liking tho contrast, al
most involuntarily begins
clear up, and soon the block
known as the prettiest block
