Amkkh an Ministers at Madrid, Ha
Tana, and other Spanish Legations and
consulates, have banded over then-
duties to the liritish oflicials who will
attend to our business in case of war.
The Uniou Jack of England flies over
all American official residences
Spanish countries. America and Eu
gland are allies and true friends. Ver
ily blood .is thicker than water.
Tiik people of Cushing and vicinity
have been thinking. Consequently
have come to the conclusion that they
pay a lot of taxes but don't get any
thing in return. We want a bridge
across the Cimarron river and we want
it badly. For a large portion" of the
year we arfc completely cut oil from
the country on the north side of the
river. Representations Have frequent-
ly bet'ii made about this, but those who
have fcontfo} of the funds of the cou
ty seem to think our interests are not
worth considering. Where defes all the
money go to ? The people ot the south-
eastern pan of this county are regular-
ly called upon to pay a mighty big
share of the money, thai is s^ent for
improvements and oflicia's In other
artfl of the county, and (is we do so,
e have concluded todemaad. & share
of the money that belongs to us, to be
spent lK this part ot the county. W
want a bridge and want . it soon, or
know the,reason why w« don't get it.
We have no Rspresentatjve we have
no bridges, we have no cqunty^ilicials,
we get uo tr^oney for any pprpo^t) it
this section from the equity; .but we
do pay a goodly share, of the tuxes, and
it Is h bout time we were treatecj as it

other purposei than to pay bUt all ou

♦ JOHN BULL OUB ALLY.
ii la Tremendous Naval Strength and
Naval Reserve.
Almost any one who strips for
tight with a treacherous, cowardly bul-
ly likes to have a big friend at hand
tee fair play. From present indica
tions Uncle Sam is to have a friend
the biggest and bravest kind at his
back when ho pulls off his coat and
pitches into Senor Don liossbastes
Furioso; no less a personage than old
John Ball, who has never liked the
Spaniards since the days of tho Invin
ciblo Armada, when be himself thrash
ed the Dons, says the New York l'rejs
Old John is certainly strong enough
to compel fair play. Since tho Hritons
launched their wicker coracles on
land waters such a navy as John has
now has never been seen, or even
agiued by tiiose who dreamed of irre
sistible "sea power." We are proud of
our tlvs battleships, in commission and
livebuilding; our seven coast defenders,
our 1! cruisers, 15 gunboats and 22
to rpedo boats. Our #34,000,000 naval
appropriation for the coming year
regarded as gigantic. Hut Imagine the
power of a navy upon which #115,000
000 is spent annually, in Which are 'Wfl,
3(K) oflicers and seamen and a liiival re-
serve of ijti.OO# Which can keop at home
a rfeet of 46 battleships and 73 CtUisers,
and dt the same time have powerful
fleets in all parts of the world I
It is iti the Mediterranean and the
Channel that John Btilt keep1! his larg
est stjuadtons. He had his ejn
France, which still cherishes vain hopes
of getting even with "perfidious Albi
ob," and has Of battleships andcruis
ers. In the Slediterratiean England
had on March I, eight battleships,
cruisers, and a torpefo iletjt of lives
selsj ih the Channel ei«ht battleships
and live cruisers, and on doiist guard
duty 11 battleships and five cruisers-a
total force of 27 battleships and 2
cruisers blockading Jean Crapaiii.
Hack of this majestic fleet, and in
reserve at the various ports and, dock
vafds, aro iS - vessels of which IV were
lattieships, and 54 cruisers.,, John
coulrl, therefore, in case of need get to
gether i !iome defense squadron of -ifl
battleships and 75 cruisers, and if he
lost any of them could replace them
from among tlje(73 vessels he is build
ing. There is little fear of French
v«8ion i[j. these circumstances.
Next in importance is the defense
of his "tight little island." John evi
dently considers the naval control of
Chinese waters. He has sent there
three battleships aqd eleven cruisers,
and ha* in the pacific 15 cruisers and
23 other vessels, his China Squadron,
Pacific Squadron, j and Australia
Squadron combined would include 53
vessels; and here again he )S master.
Russia and France complied,eoiild not
whip him, and Japan with its modern
fleet js.his ally. i
Evidently Johr Bull does not think
he is likely to have aay, trouble with
for he has sent to our neighborhood
only one battleship and five cruisers.
the North and South Atlantic on
our side, lie has only eleven large ships;
but, of course, he could send over his
great home fleet in ten days or two
weeks. To South Africa 17 vessels
have been ijent.. In ths Training Ser-
icb the <53 vessels, wit.ii Surveying Ser-
vice 8, is the T: ooping and Particular
irvice II and in the Harbor Servloe 16.
Hut this is not all. lu the Naval He-
serve John has all the big Atlantic
liners, and the hundreds cf steamers
hicli carry the Union Jack to all parts
the globe. -Sixteen^of. his. warships
ire employed in training olllcers and
men to man -the Reserve ships and
eight ships in training -boys. Com-
pared with sufch naval preparations .is
these, our own arc certainly not for-
midable,
