There Is no magic formula for sim-
plifying distribution. Improvement In
methods can only come from careful
study of the routes followed by cach
kind or clasa of commodity In Its "long,
long trull" from producer to consumer.
This fact Is recognized by every stu-
dent of present economic processes
and likewise has been taken Into ac-
count In the atudlea of marketing prob-
lems carried on by the buk-eau of mar-
kets, United States Department of Ag-
riculture. One of these specific prob-
lems which the department's special-
ists have studied and regarding which
they offer definite recommendations
that Involve a real saving to consumer
and producer, baa to do with the mar-
keting of hldea, a by-product from
which almost every farmer can derive
profit If be will give It proper atten-
tion.
Knowledge of Oradea Needed.
The first need in the present situa-
tion is a familiarity on the part of the
producer of country hides with the
recognized grades and classes of hldea
and skins. Such an understanding will
enable him to prepare and dispose of
his products much more intelligently

makes poaalble. At the aame time a
lowering of prlcca for the final prod-
act will be the tendency, since dlatrl-
butloa coeta will be taaa. The use of
a local dealer as Intermediary be-
tween the producer and the large hide
dealer In aome cases la advisable, since
he la In a position to do needed aort-
iug and cleaalfylng.
Either of these almpler method* aug-
gested for the producer of country
hldea—selling direct Jto the large deal-
er or through a local dealer—ap-
proaches more nearly the packer**
methods novo prevailing.
Obstacle! to Overcome.
Such consignment marketing, how-
ever, presuppose* mutual confidence
and fair dealing by both producer and
dealer and, unfortunately, this doee
not always exist. Another obstacle to
the establishment of this method IB the
producer's preference for ready cash.
Many producers prefer to accept any
price obtainable from local buyers,
such as general stores, produce deal-
ers, Junk collectors and traveling hide
buyers rather than consignathelr prod-
ucts to distant car-lot dealers In cen-
tral markets. The place that traveling
buyers or agents occupy In an im-
proved system of distribution Is a mat-
ter on which one can be less specific,
since opinions of the trade differ as to
the practicability of traveling hide
buyera or agents or large hide dealers.
Already country producers of hides
are coming to see the saving that re-
sults from the simpler system briefly
Indicated here and are making con-
tracts with large dealers In whom they
have confidence and who in turn see
that it is the part of good business to
respect and foster this confidence.

and profitably. But even If he should
produce the best quality of hides and
skins, the small producer Is at a dis-
advantage compored with large pro-
ducers like the packers, for example,
bccauop the latter handle large quan
titles of hides and can sort and grade
thein according to the demands of
various tanners. The extremely scat-
tered sources and the comparatively
smiill individual production of country
hides and skins makes It Impossible
for country producers to sort and
classify their product In marketable
lot*.
Nevertheless, many features of the
present methods of marketing country
hides can be improved, since these
methods support expensive nonessen-
tial profit-absorbing and speculating

Distribution Systems.
Three principal methods of market-
ing domestic hides and skins prevail
at present, as shown by studies made
by the bureau of markets. The one In
x.hlch the farmer, ranchman and local
butcher usually participates Is need-
lessly complex and costly. The hides
which any one of these individuals has
to sell are usually disposed of either
to a Junk dealer or a local buyer.
These men. In turn, sell to a traveling
buyer. The latter passes on his goods
i to the targe hide denier, and this denl-
i er sells to a broker or a tanner's buyer,
' from whom the cdllepted skins are
' finally disposed of to a tannery. Thus
1 then- Is maintained * long, circuitous
, distribution system that adds needless-
' ly to the final cost.
! Contrast tills system with the direct
. methods which the packers are able to
, employ. Each packer having a large
i assortment of hides la able to grade
and classify his output an that he can
dispose of It advantageously to * hide
broker or a tanner's buyer direct.
From these men the hldea go direct to
the tanner. Thus various Intermediate
agencies and their profit* are elim-
inated.
So dimple * distribution svstem la,
of course, impossible for the small pro-
ducer. However, experience ha* shown
that the farmer and ranchman and the
'oral butcher can dispense with the
junk dealer and tbi traveling buyer,
and In aome case*, w.fh the local deal-

To Improve an old lawn Is frequent-
ly more difficult than to make a new
one. It is usually Impracticable to
attempt the Improvement of turf that
lsM-ery poor. Reasonably good turf,
however, can be bettered materially
by reseeding and fertilizing. Reseed-
ing an old lawn should be done at the
same time of the year as new seeding.
South of New Tork it should be done
in the early autumn. If the lawn la
patchy the small areas should be
scratched with steel rake or similar
Implement and dressed with a mixture
of good loam, compost, or humus and
the grass seed then sown. The loani or
humus forms a suitable medium for
the germination of the seeds und the
development of the young grass plants.
If the turf 1* thin over large areas,
seeding can best be accomplished by
a disk seeder, which cuts into the turf
and deposita the seed. I{_a disk seed-
er Is not available, some Implement
should be.uaed that will looaen. the
soli but not tear the turf badly. After
seeding, a dressing of loam or compost
ahouid be given and the area rolled
lightly.
In the northern tier of s'ates re-
seeding should be done early In the
spring. At that time the soli is more
open than later In the season and of-
fers a belter seed bed. I.lght rolling
after seeding In the spring Is usually
beneficial.
Care ahouid be taken when mowing
or watering newly patched area* to
avoid disturbing the young grass.
