Children in the Home.
We have no perfect Idea of a homo
wiihcut children. It may possess ev-
ery material and necessary comfort,
and Its hearthstone may shine with
a flame as pure and as constant as
the vestal Are; but without the patter-
ing of llttl.j feet and the merry ring-
Inn of treble voices In its apartments,
it is "found wanting." Little children

Christening bhi^s With Wine.
Christening ships with wine is a
survival of barbarism. In tre olden
days, when sacrifices were offered to
propitiate the gods of a nation, it
was the practice to select seme per-
Hon, and to spill his bload over the
prow of a now vessel. In course cf
time wine was substituted for blood,
and the custom holds good In nearly
every maritime nation today.

Elect roculture.
Elcctroculture Is m somewhat new
word In our agriculture. It means the
science of making plants grow by the
hel? of clectrlclty Little expedition
'ation has been done In this line on
the American continent, except by
growing plants in tho glare of electric
lights. Hut In Europi the matter Is
receiving a good deal of attention, the
electricity being applied tliore fW<-< tly
to the plants In various wa>v In
Erance pamphlets are being published
on the results.
I'nder tlie intensive agriculture fol
lowed near the great capitals of Eu-
rope the acceleration of growth means
a great deal. Some of tho land under
glass near Paris rents for two thou-
sand francs per acre per year. It Is
evident that It Is a very important
matior to be able to increase the pro-
I Auction only a little. In the United
j States It Is nt present different, and
1 vc art not yet driven to applying eloc
trlclty to the growing of farm crops.
The results obtained ii> Europe are
Interesting though not extraordinary.
Many plants grew more rapidly when
I the soil was supplied with electricity
and in somo cases the seed goruil
| luted much more quickly. Thus peas
| sown In ground that was supplied
artificially wllh electricity germinated
in two and a hall' days, while without
being supplied with electricity thoy
germinated In four days. It was found
that an Induction current caused tho
| most rapid growth of tho plaut, while
with the continuous current tho yield
' was larger. So one kind of a current
would be needed for lettuce and an-
other for peas.
The Frcp.ch scientists do not find It
difficult to get very good results, but
.-ay that they are unable to overcome
the obstacle lu the way In tho cost of
electricity. Therefore electroculture
Is as yet not a practical sclenco. The
question of profit cannot be yet con-
sidered, that depending on u greatly
reduced cost of making electricity.

In Any Time of Trouble Is Grape-Nuta.
Food to rebuild the strength and
that Is predlgested must be selected
when one Is convalescent At this
time there Is nothing so valuable as
Grape-Nuts, for the reason that this
food Is all nourishment and Is also all
digestible nourishment. A woman who
used It says: j
"Some time ago I was very 111 with
typhoid fever, so 111 everyone thought
I would die, even myself. It left me
so weak I could not properly digest
food of any kind and 1 also had much
bowel troublo which left me a weak,
helpless wreck.
"I needed nourishment as badly as
anyone could, but none of the tonics
helped me until I flna-ly tried Grape-
Nuts food morning and evening. This
not only supplied food that I thought
delicious as could be, tut It also made
me perfectly well an< strong again
so I can do all my hcusework, sleep
well, can eat anything without any
trace of bowel troubl and for that
reason alone Grape-Nu'« food Is worth
Its weight In gold." Same given by

Egg Production Variation.
When hens are investigated as tlior
oughly aa dairy cows they will lie
found to vary as greatly In their abil-
ity to produco eggs. Wo havo as a
people gone oil the assumption that a
lien was a hen. That was true, but
sometimes she lias proved to bo noth-
ing more, so far as oggs are concerned
—not even a layer. But wo are only
now beginning to find that out The
dairy cows havo been Investigated
as to their ability to produce butter
cheaply. Some were found that made
butter at u cost of eight cents a pound
and others that made butter nt n cost
of 70 cents a pouud. Tho hens havo
been Investigated as to their ability
to produce eggs cheaply and some havo
been found that produced eggs at ten
cents a dozen lu wloter and others at
a dollar n dozen. A good many hens,
like a good many a s, nre more
profitable dead tlinn alive.
Wo will never get very satisfactory
work done in the line of experlmcnta
non till we arc able to keep hens by
themselves and know for a certainty
the record of each ben and bo able
to watch each one lu all respects.
There are bens that are almost non-
producers of eggs. In tho ordinary
flock they mlnglo with the others and
ure always healthy. They would make
admirable potple, but tho owner feels
that he cannot dispense with any of
his layers. There arc other bens that
are not attractive looking, yet 4f they
are kept by themselves thoy will be
found to he great egg producers, ''cry
often egg producing gets a fowl out
if shape, and this very thing leads
o her being killed oft for the table
rhen she should bo rcU tned.

Sorting Market Poultry.
The fanner must learn to do bis
own sorting and not leavo It to tho
commission man. Tho commission
man would as soon tho farmer did
not Bort for then he will havo a
chancc to take some ofT the price ot
the fowls, unless he la strictly hon-

knows that ho will not get pay tor
sorting the poultry and repacking It.
That a good deal of repacking by the
commission men Is done on the quiet
Is to be supposed, as they havo every
Inducement and the powor. A man
that does that may well justify him-
