Vol. IV.
HAILEYVILLE. OKLAHOMA, OCT. 23. 1*08
No. 34
CALLS THEM
ANARCHISTS
Judge Cole Docs Not Mince
Words When Speaking of
Nightriders.
MAKES SPECIAL CHARGE
Tells Grand Jury to Diligently
Inquire into Rumors of
Threats.
The grand jury summoned
some time ago by the jnrr com-
missioners appeared today in the
district court, were examined,
impanelled and charged. The
grand jury is composed as fol-
lows : ]{. T. Forbes, foreman,
li. H. Hall, Charles H. Laws,
Dan O'Leary, It. V. Glick, J. O.
Davis, B. A. Card, C. A. Heath-
cock, H N. Ames, S. J. John-
son, T. 1'. Johnson, 11. VV. Bled-
soe.
Judge Cole gave tha custom-
ary charge, dwelling on murder,
rape, arson, burglarly, robbery,
violations of the liquor law, false
pretenses, and the general of-
fenses of every grade usually
emphasized in the charge.
The only novel part of the
charge was with reference to al
leged night-riding in parts of
Pittsburg county.
The judge said that it had
been reported, how truly he did
not know, that certain farmers
in the county had received
anonymous letters threatening
all sorts of disaster to their per-
sons and their property unless
they refrained from harvesting
their crops until the threateners
concluded that the price was ad-
equate lie said that he had al-
so heard that certain gins had
been warned in the same cow-
ardly fashion against accepting
any more cotton to be ginned.
Unsaid that this night riding,
as it appeared in the older states
was a shocking type of anarchy
and that every good citizen
should join in theelTort to stamp
it out.
"The conditions in some of the
states are simply appalling and
I trust that our grand new state
of Oklahoma may lie spared
from such disgraceful tilings,"
said the court. "They are shock
ing and demoralizing to civilized
communities. You should dili-
gently inquire into and make a
thorough investigation of these
stories and if there beany truth
in them act courageously."
I here are many cases to be in-
vestigated by the grand jury.
County Attorney Dean thinks
that it will have at least two
weeks' work ahead of it. There
have been several killings since
the last grand jury adjourned,
among them several have been
bound over to the grand jury.
It is also likely that individuals
will iisist on tliH grand jury in-
quiring into at least one case
where the man was released at
his preliminary.
While the grand jury was in-
structed to inquire into viola-
tions of the liquor law, tried in
the county court, it is pretty
generally believed that the court
of inquiry conducted by the
county attorney and county
judge has been able to handle
this class of offenses vigorously.
There has been two killings at
Dow, two in the North End, and
one at Adamson since the last
grand jury adjourned.
