Dr. W. L. Kendall's residence
caught fire Monday night
about ten o'clock and had not
the alarm been turned in when it
was the fire might have gotten
beyond control. It caught in a
closet and the explosion of a
bottle awoke the family. No
material damage was done.
C. H. McFarland's ice storage
house near the Frisco railroad
caught fire Monday, from a pas-
sing train, and burned down.
There was about twenty tons of
ice in the house, none of which
was removed. About twenty-
five percent of the ice wa3 lest
in undergoing the roasting.
Several fire extinguishers were
used on the burning building but
to no effect, as the flames had
gotten too much headway. The
loss was not great.

The farmer sat in his easy chair,
Thinking his day's work wa3 done:
But his hale old wife with busy care
Had fixed him an errand to run.
To the BANNER GROCERY he must go
For coffee and sugar and tea,
Spice for the piokles, yeast for the dough,
And candj for good children three.
He must not forget from Woody d: Kirk
To bring a stew or i roast,
Some lard and suet and sausage3.
And butter to cover the toast.

Band Weeting.
A few of the young people met
in the city hall Monday night
and organized a brass band.
There was present some of the
best musical talent, and all were
enthusiastic. Prof. Best, one
of the best band leaders in the
South, is at the head of the
movement, and there can be no
doubt of its success. The idea 7n IIII i IIIII11111,, - l7n "li'lVn'i. i
is for the merchants and busi- : • *.
ness men of the city to buy the
instruments and other r.eceesa-
ries and donate them to the city.
In this way the hand will ba per-
petuated as each member will
play on the city's instrument
and should any member leave
the town or otherwise withdraw
from the band, some one else
will take his place without any
extra expense to the member
joining or the city. W. V. Mor-
r.son was elected chairman and
R. H. Whitlow was elected sec-
retary.
