Miss Betty Sue Tyson of Welch
earned a position on the William
Woods college honor roll for
the first nine weeks of the
second semester by making an
average of 3.00 out of a possible
4.00.

Emerson Wade of Portland
Oie. a former resident of
Chetopa and Indian Territory
on Russell Creek who married
Gladys Fisher was in Welch
for a visit with relatives and
friends of Chetopa Welch Vi-
nita and Big Cabin. Emerson
is now a mechanic in the employ
of the street car company
for which he was a conductor
for 22 years. He looks much
younger than he is and enjoys
life as of yore.
Mrs. John Helkenberg of Cof-
feyville Kans. was a visitor
over the week-end vith Mrs.
Glen Williamson and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Bond and
daughter of Oak Grove Ark.
were visitors in Welch Thurs-
day on their way home from
Arkansas City Kans. Oscar
had not been in the old home
town since his father Dr. Bond
left Welch about 1903 and
located in Ottawa county. Oscar
was a publisher at Wyandotte
Okla. for awhile but his paper
soon bit the dust and the whole
family left for Arkansas.
Frank Dunning and Janey
Martin of Tulsa spent the week
end in Welch visitors with Mr.
and Mrs. Bob Martin.
Clarence and Wayne Rupert
sons of Mr. and Mrs. Riley Rup-
ert of West Anthracite district
left this week for Fort Sill
where they will be designated
their places to serve in the US
army.
Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Ingram of
Detroit Mich stopped in Welch
Monday on their way to Okla-
homa City to visit relatives.
Mack Tilley and Tom Davis
who have been in the Hawaain
Islands at Honolulu for the past
few months have arrived in Los
Angeles but said nothing as to
whether or not they are coming
home while in the USA.
Miss Fay Wilson of Oklahcma
City spent the past week and
this in Welch a visitor with rela-
tives and her many friends.
She returned to Oklahoma City
Wednesday today where she is
employed.
It has been announced that an
old fashioned singing will be'
held at the Christian church j
Sunday afternoon at about 2:30
oclock sponsored by Mr. Couch

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Campbell
and son Charley were business
callers in Vinita Monday and
visited Mrs. Don Eads at tbe
Vinita hospital and Mrs. Nora
Smith at the County hospital.
On account of the hard rain
Monday night we had no mail
Tuesday.
The Clarence Shields family
were ill the past week with flu.
Harry Campbell accompanied
Don Eads to the hospital Wed-
nesday and Mrs. Eads returned
to her mother Mrs. E. Thorn-
tou home in Welch with them.
Helen Armstrong and pupils
enjoyed a picnic Thursday.
Mrs. Nora Smith who has
been in the Vinita hospital with
a broken hip was returned to
the home of her son Floyd
Smith in Chetopa Thursday.
Mrs. Harry Campbell visited
over the week end in Joplin at
the home of her daughter Mrs.
Bill Guinn.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sprouse of
Fairview Kans. visited Sun-
day afternoon at Jim Emert
home.
CENTRALIA
.The seniors will present their
annual play So Help Me Han
nah at the school auditorium
Friday night. Everyone is in-
vited. Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey Camp-
bell and son and Mrs. Lou Odell
were in Vinita Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Graves
and daughter Mary were Vini-
ta visitors Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Peiriman
and children and Lavona and
Garland Graves enjoyed a fish-
ing trip on Big creek Sunday.
The 4-H club boys and girls
along with their coach Mr.
Howard attended the 4 H club
rally in Vinita Saturday.
J. D. Pennington is spending
a few days with his family here.
He is employed near Muskogee.
Joanna Romine of Bluejacket
spent last week with the J. R.
Cox family.
Visitors of Mrs. Drew Taylor
and daughter Sunday were: Mr.
and Mrs. C. L. Parsons and
family Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Par-
sons and family Mrs. A. E
Culver and Mr. and Mrs. F. N.
Cheek and daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. John Mistier
were callers at the Dr. B. L.
Elam home Sunday.
Mr. McVay and son Wimbern
and Bill Holmes called on L. R.
Holmes Sunday.
Jay Wagnon was a Saturday
caller at the Patterson home.
Mrs. Ed. Post and sons Mr.
and Mrs. Glen Bean Mr. and
Mrs. Lyman Bean and children
spent Sunday at the Martindale
home.
RUSSELL CREEK
Rains and more high waters
last week. Russell creek has
been too high to cross unless one
had a boat for several days.
Rome Bedell accompanied Mr.
Paden most of last week on R. 3
Despite the high waters and
muddy roads we received our
mail each day.
Graduating exercises were
held Thursday night. There
were four graduates Anna Mae
Warner Donald Cleveland Del-
mar Blankenship and Wilbnr
Windle. Class colors were blue
and white and the class flower
was the sweet pea. The class
motto was Not the End But

or Play Near Electric Wires....
A Message to Parents and Teachers
Playing around or climbing electric towers or poles is a very danger-
ous pastime for children and often results in serious or fatal accidents.
Even if they do not come in contact with electric wires they may fall and
seriously or permanently injure themselves.
The flying of kites under or near electric lines is also dangerous and
annually results in marly serious accidents to children.
If through our combined efforts we can impress upon the minds of
children ho5e serious dangers it will be a big step in eliminating accidents
and iniuries

School closed Friday. Six
students received awards of
honor for perfect attendance
who were: Bonnie and Julian
Wright Minnie Novilla McCord.
Donald and Marvin Cleveland
and Delmar Blankenship. The
teacher Mrs. Sapp and husband
Lft Friday afternoon for their
home in Fairland. They were
planning to leave for California
Tuesday of this w?ek where he
plans to work in a defense plant
Vacation days are here again.
Now for the fishing and old
swimming hole. Sadness as
well as gladness comes with va-
cation as teacher and students
each go their various ways un-
til the school bell rings in the
fall to take up their studies
again.
C. W. Stoner spent Saturday
and Sunday with friends south
of Welch.
J. Monroe Stephens of east of
Chetopa was a caller at his par-
ents home in this corner Sunday
Mrs. Alice McCoy of Walla
Walla. Wash. came recently to
visit her sister Mrs. Fred Scott
and family and other relatives.
