Let "early collections" be the
motto of every preacher in the In-
dian Mission Conference this year.
This done and there will be no need
for a "deficit" column in our An-
nual Conference reports. We hope
to give in our next paper the assess-
ments of the Conference.
The Rev. J. W. Cowart contem-
plates moving to Muskogee soon.
As yet he has failed to find a house
to rent. It has occurred to us that
some Creek citizen could make it
profitable financially, by putting
up private residences here and rent-
ing them.
The Rev. 0. S. Jones, P. C. on
Grand River Circuit, has moved
his family to Muskogee for the pur-
pose of educating his children in
Harrell Institute. We hoDe other
brethren will do likewise. Musko-
gee is a good place for a preacher
to live.
Mrs. N. A. Owen, mother of our
new Indian Agent, Mr. R. L. Owen,
expects soon to make Muskogee
her home. Also the family of Col.
D. M. Wisdom, now located in Ft.
Smith, Ark. They will be a very
desirable addition to our Muskogee
society.
Our young readers, no doubt, will
be glad to hear that "Uncle Jo"
has promised to " do better," and
write for them oftener this year.
We all will be glad to hear from
him—the old as well as the young.
We desire to publish notices of
quarterly - meetings and District
Conferences. Will our presiding
elders please see that they reach us
in due time for the paper ?
The new pews and fresh paint
adds considerably to the appear-
ance and comfort of our Muskogee
Methodist Church.
We sympathize deeply with the
Rev. J. W. McCrarey of Vinita
Station. His son, living in Atlanta,
Ga., died recently.
Indian Mission Conference.
The fortieth session of the Indian
Mission Annual Conference con-
vened at Pierce Memorial Chapel,
near Skullyville, Choctaw Nation,
Sept. 17,1885. Bishop J. C. Gran-
bery, D.D., presided. E. R. Shap-
ard was elected Recording Secre-
tary ; E. W. Brodie, Assistant Sec-
retary ; and L. W. Rivers, Statistical
Secretary. Nearly all the members,
both clerical and lay, were present.
The usual committees were appoint-
ed. Reports from Dr. Morton,
Secretary of Church Extension
Board; Dr. McFerrin, Agent of the
Southern Methodist Publishing
House; the Committee on Editorial
Management of the St. Louis Chris-
tian Advocate, and the publishers
of Our Brother in Red were pre-
sented and referred to the Com-
mittee on Books and Periodicals.
Reports from the Conference and
Mission Schools were read and re-
ferred to the Committee on Edu-
cation. It was gratifying to note
the prosperous condition in which
these schools were reported.
Dr. A. R. Winfield, editor of the
Arkansas Methodist; Dr. J. E.
G-idbey, editor of the Southwestern
Methodist; Dr. R. A. Young, Mis-
sionary Secretary; Revs. M. E.
Butt, J. W. Boswell, and V. V.
Harlan, of the Arkansas Confer-
ence, were among the visiting
brethren present.
J. J. Methvin, A. J. Culwell,
Stephen Folger, J. T. Hall, A. N.
Averyt, and T. A. Shannon were
admitted on trial.
E. W. Brodie, W. H. Morehead,
F. E. Shanks, J. C. Scivally, and C.
C. Spence remain on trial.
C. F. Roberts was continued in
the class of the first year.
