The Red Cross always redeems its
promises.
Wouldn't you give up your sum-
mer vacation if you thought It would
save some soldier's life?
Keep the home fires burning
While your hearts are yearning;
Though your lads are far away
They dream of home.
There's a silver lining
Thru the dark clouds shining;
Turn the dark clouds inside out
Till the boys come home.
The Ited Cross Spirit Spenk.i
Wherever war, with itH red woes
Or flood, or fire or famine Roes,
:i 03 'ooi 'o.ieux
If earth In any quarter quakes
Or pestilence its ravage makes,
Thither I Hy.
1 kneel behind the soldier's trench
I walk mid shambles' Hrtiear and stanch
The dead 1 mour-n.
I bear the stretcher and I bend
O'er Fritz, Pierre and Jack to mend
What shells have torn.
I go wherever; Men may dare,
1 go wherever woman's care
And Ipve.ctin live.
Wherever stpepfeth and skill can bring
Surcease to Ituman suffering,
Or solace give.
1 helped upon IIt\ldor's shore,
With Hospitaller Knights I bore
The first Red Cross;
1 was thp Lijdy of the Lamp;
I saw In Solferlno's camp
The Crimson loss.
I am your pennies and your pounds
I am your bodies on their rounds
Of pain afar;
I am doing what you would
If you were only where you could
Your avatar.
The Cross which on my arm 1 wear.
The flag which o'er my breast 1 bear
Is hut the sign
Of what you'd sacrifice for him
Who suiters on the hellish rim
Of war's red line.
—-John Finley.
Laying aside any pecuniary bene-
fits that may or may not come to the
American people, this war will be
worth all it has cost if only It assures
lasting peace and honorable dealings
among nations and peoples, saying
nothing of the satisfaction that must
come to the people of a nation who
have gone to the rescue of humanity
and civilization and have seen their
cause crowned with victory.
Democratic sentiment throughout
the state continues to crystallize
around Judge J. B. A. Robertson as
the party's candidate for Governor,
and the campaign is now well enough
advanced to make it possible to esti-
mate the strength of the various can-
didates. From every section of the
state the information comes of the
organization of "Robertson for Gov-
ernor" Clubs and all the other can-
didates continue to direct their act-
ivities against Robertson, This
proves that he continues to lead and
the field against him is badly scatter-
ed and making no appreciable head-
way.
ALL POTATO DINNER
An all-potato dinner was one of
the features of a recent meeting of I
the Topeka (Kansas) chamber of J
Commerce. The dinner was a dem- ;
onstratlon of the present European ;
needs of wheat, and of the possibil-
ities that Kansas presents for pala-
table and cheap substitutes in this
time of need.
No wheat was served at the dinner.
Every dish contained potatoes from
soup "as a first line of offense" as the
local reporter has it. to potato cake ;
as a windup.
The girls of the home economics j
department of the Topeka high j
school displayed 101 different ways |
of preparing potatoes for feed. The
idea of the potato dinner followed an
address by Food Administrator Innes 1
before the Rotary Club.

Proper Food for Weak Stomachs
The proper food for one man may be
all wrong for another. Every one
should adopt a diet suited to his age
and occupation. Those who have weak
stomachs need to be especially careful
and should eat slowly and masticate
their food thoroughly. It is also im-
portant that they keep their bowels
regular. When they become consti-
pated or when they feel dull and stupid
after eating, they should take Cham-
berlain's Tablets to strenghten the
stomach and move the bowels. They
are easy to take and pleasant in effect.
Is this any time for dollar pinch-
ing when men are dying?
