a Pen Picture Of
Our Town
A Few Facts And A Little
" Free Advice
Without doubt this is the next
state to become densely populat-
ed. Many of its spirited little
cities will become centers of
trade, and of those which do, it
will be because of the united ef-
forts of the citizens in the en-
couraging trade and others in-
terests necessary to the growth
of a town. W« believe we are
peculiarly well situated to be
caught up in the tide and ride
proudly forward on the topmost
wave of prosperity.. We should
clear the shore of the break-
water of jealousy, discontent
and discouragement. We should
have strong faith in its possibli-
ties and pull together with even
and steady stroke. Our splen-
did school privileges, if advanc-
ed and maintained as they should
be, will prove an incentive to
draw. Another important fea-
ture is to advertise your city,
speak good concerning it and
show forth its excellencies. Save
your money and when you spend
it, spend it at home. Some of it
will be sure to come back to you.
When able to build, build at
home and encourage your friends
to do the same. Encourage
everyone to come and live with
us. During the past few years
many strangers have settled
with us through the encourage-
ment of friends here. They are
good citizens; they build or buy
substantial homes, and take an
active interest in the general
welfare of the town. Keep your
business to the front, and every
interest of the town on the ob-
servatory, to be seen by the
world.
We presume that every citizen
of our town is, or ought to be
desirous to see it advance, to
see it improve, to see it advance
in all the interests that pertain
to a town of thrift and enter-
prise. Again we presume that
if you, who live in your town,
make no effort in this direction,
who, if there are aay benefits
aceuring therefrom would be
the recipients thereof, we do not
believe our neighbors, who have
particular interest in our welfare
would be so very mindful of us
as to give us a boost by invest-
ing a few thousand dollars for
our special good, or starting any
enterprise that would be for the
upbuilding of our town. If a
town is ever built up and placed
in a growing condition it will
be directly or indirectly due to
thoee who live in it and if you
wish to know the steps to be
taken we will cite a few. Talk
it up, its interests, its facilities
and vorious adaptibilities to dif-
ferent branches of industry.
Write about it, beautify its
streets, invest your money in it,
patronize its merchants and
every enterprise started as far
as it is at all consistent, elect
good men to office, advertise in
its newspapers, be courteous to
those who come among you and
never let an opportunity to speak
a good word about it pass. Re-
member that every dollar you in-
vest in a permanent improve-
ment; is that much money at in-
terest and is that much toward
building up your town.
There is no quicker way to
take the life, growth, and
energy out of a town than for
its citizens to be constantly hold-
ing up the dark side of the pic-
ture to the gaze of the inquirer.
The word "if" keeps everyone

in doubt, and doubt keeps every
man from going forward with
the improvement he would other
wise make. There is nothing
like confidence to make a success
of anything and if you haven't
got any of it, don't communicate
the fact to your neighbor, much
less to a stranger and if the bent
of your mind is to continually go
against every interest of the
town in which you live for the
sake of tha town get out of it
and go to some place that is al-
ready lifeless and has no interest
at stake, where you, like the old
ladies root beer, if you don't do
any good you won't do any hurt.
Go where you will you Will
find people, both men tad wo-
men, who are always waiting for
something to turn up to better
their condition in life. Yet this
class of people is the last one to
try and turn something up that
will be a benefit to thorn in any
way, but still wait from day to
day. If you want something to
turn up, get a hustle aad see if
you cannot find something you
can turn up to your advantage.
There are plenty of ehances for
every one if they are sought af-
ter, but they will net come to
you if you do not hunt them «p.
