- The Durant Chamber of Com
merce last week protested in the
strongest way against an appro-
priation by Congress for the im
provement of Red River from
Fulton Ark to Denison Texas
Whether Durant has put in to
oppose what thousands of people
favor with the hope to prevent
further appropriation and con-
sequently further work is good
policy is quite questionable A
protest to the Durant resolution
has already come from Paris
Texas a city farther from Red
River than is Dnrant and which
city would expect benefit if the
river is made navigable Old Red
once carried boats 6p as far
as Denison and it would ap-
pear that with good work by the
Government it could be done
again Not many years ago this
writer saw a steamboat plying
up and down the Red River and
it did Rood service The river is
not now smaller than it was then
It seems to ns that to make the
rivet1 navigable would be of much
benefit to Bryan couhty and to
Durant Government officers
