FOR COUNTY JUDGE
I
A want ad in the Cimarr n
always brings results. In o«
week'* 1--'if we adverti*«l
weather prophet who <ould
the goods and we got him a
we got some moisture. II
But you ought to have been
noticed the crowd of all sorts that
mad<* application for the job of
prophet. All the local Boi.se City
daddies were around; some wore old
clothes to commend themselves to us;
aomc wore bloomers; dome dreined in
hohbleskirts, and others in haiein at-
tire, while stil others were scarcely
dressd at all at least one did not
need x ray eyes to see through, but
was looked over on account of the
warm weather.
Finally, after all had been quizzed
thoroughly, and the same old song
that we had been hearng all the year
was reiterated by the local talent,
there came an old gentleman whose
presence at least impressed us as
being worthy of a trial. He intro-
duced himself as "Hiram True". Hav-
ing once rnt a gentleman named Hi-
ram who was represented as being
highly honorable and no doubt true,
our interest became manifested in
this man. While his general appear-
ance was by no means prepossessing,
there was some attraction that drew
our attention.
He wore a beard similar to that
of Uncle Sam's that appear.-, m the
cartoons; he wore but one shoe and
the other one was not tied; his face
was somewhat bony but by no means
bad looking; his pants were of cot-
ton fabric colored by some dye that
our mothers used to call butternut,
which gave them a kind of a cop-
perSajr tint, fie constantly kept a
toothpick in his mouth of the S^ars
Sawbuck variety and he had but one
tooth in his head to pick.
But the quiz of Mr. Hiram True
came and was so intresting that wo
took him on for a trial ami here give
some of the conversation:
"Good morning, sir," was our greet-
ing to the new prophet. "Your name,
please?"' querried the stenographer!
with a little silly giggle lil e some
of them can give out, you know,
"My name, sis, is Hiram True re-
sponded the gentleman in a smooth
voice.
"What i* your occupation?" was
asked by some one of the company.
"Well, they say I'm a cracker- iack
weather prophet down Past."
"Oh, J w„. You desire to enter
the competitive examination for the
job that we advertised for?''
"Exactly so, sir," replied the new
comer.
"Where are you from, Mr. True—
what state?"
"Well, I don't 'low to tell."
"Why?"
"Well, you see it's this Way. You
might laugh at me and wh i more
you would not believe me—and this
is One requisite, if my prophesies
are to come true, then those interest-
ed must believe me."
"V«ry well, then, when is it going
to rain?"
"It is raining somewhere now."
"But when is it going to rain in
Boise City?"
'That depends on the cloud:-, < rne-
what," replied the prophet.
"Good enough, but we desire a
man who can tell us about 1 he mois-
ture. Now can't you tell something
nearer about this?"
"Yes. sir. I can. rJust as 1 as
this dry s|h?1I breaks you "will have
plenty of rain," was his answer.
"When will this dry spell break
up?'
"When it rains."
Well, Mr. True, we are convinced
without further questions that you
are certainly not a false prophet, so
we will try you a few days and
should rain come—and we believe
that you have told us the trut'
—we will just lay you up to use
on special occasions."
"Well, you see I could not tell a
falsehood, for my name is True."
(It rained on June 4th and we
have to hand it to Mr. True.)
I Hereby announce my candidacy
for ih<- office of county judge of Cim-
arron county, mbj«:t to the approval j county assessor
of trie Democratic voters at the pri
