Farm Statistics
American farmers contributed
over a million dollars' worth of
merchandise, or more than one
half of the domestic products ex
ported from the United States in
the fiscal year just ended. Of
the high-record exportation of
$2,018,540,025 worth of domestic
merchandise in the fiscal year,
1,024 million dollars represent-
ed the value of products drawn
directly or indirectly from the
farm.
Of the 10 chief agricultural
products exported, cotton leads

the next largest items being, in
the order named, meat and dairy
products, 150 million; bread-
stuffs, 124 million; unmanufac-
tured tobacco, 89 million; fruits
and nuts, 25 million; oil cake 20
million; cattle and other live ni-
inula, 19 million; cotton seed oil,
17 million; vegetables, 54 million;
and hides and skins, 5 million
dollars, these ten articles alone
showing a total exportation for
the year of 990 million dollars.
The remaining agricultural prod-
ucts exported in sums ranging
from 1 million to 5 million dollars
include Porto liican coffee, 5
million dollars; grease, 5 million;
glucose, 84 million; seeds 21 mil-
lion; hops, over 2 million; ginsing,
and other medicinal roots, 13 4
million; eggs, 1 4 million; corn
oil H million; Hay, 1 million; and
hair a little over a million dollars.
This exportation of 1,024 mil-
lion dollars worth of farm prod-
ucts, while somewhat larger than
in the preceding year, is still be-
low the record made in 1907

of merchandise of that class left
the country. Comparing the
1911 exports with those of 1907,
cotton increased from 481 million
dollars in 1907 to 5H5 million in
the year just ended. This in-
crease, however, is solely due to
higher prices prevailing in 1911,
since in that year but 4,034 mil-
lion pounds were exported, com
pared 4,518 million pounds in
1907. In fact cotton prices show
a steady upward tendency, the
average export price for the fis-
cal year 1911.14$ cents per pound
being the highest since 1873.
Hog products have decreased in
value of exports from 124 million
dollars in 1907 to 100 million in
1911; beef products, from 39 mil-
lion to 11 million; and butter and
cheese, from U million to 2J
million. Cattle and other ani-
mals also share in the decreasing
tendency, their evports having
fallen fr -m 41 million dollars in
1907 to 19 million in 1911. Bread-
stuffs show a marked decline,
from 203 million dollars in 1900
to 184 million in 1907 and to 124
million in the year just ended.
This loss occurs chiefly in wheat
and wheat Hour, since corn ex-
ports in 1911 were 30 million dol-
lars in value compared with 25
million in 1910, while chose of
w heat and flour as a whole show*
ed in 1911 a total of only 71 mil-
lion dollars, compared with 95
million in 1910 and 122 million in
1907.
Tobacco, fruit and nuts, and
vegetables, however, have moved
counter to the general downward
trend in the movement of farm
products, each of these classes
showing gains not only over 1910
but also over the high-record
year 1907. Exports of tobacco
increased from 33 million dollars
in 1907 to 39 million in 1911; those
of fruits and nuts, from 17£ mil-
lion to 24+ million; and those of
vegetables, from 4 million to 5J
million dollars.
