Timber Reserve is
Guard
McAlester Okla July 28 — Four
hundred men each of whom draws a
salary of $10(7 to 1 1 25 per month are
employed by the interior department
to guard the unallotted timber lands
of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians
in the eastern and southeastern part of
the state
These guards were stationed there
on the recommendation of J George
Wright of Muskogee commissioner (o
the Five Tribes who recently caused
the indictment of neatly one 'hundred
men charge with the unlawful cut
ting of timber on Indian lands They
are armed with guns and with horns
for signaling and are stationed at in
tervals around the western side of the
reservation
This man declares that the protec-
tion given the Indians is a farce for the
reason that timber cutting has been
permitted there for years and it is
averred that in some places only
stumps and scrubs are being guarded
Seven guards board at one hotel and
pay Si per day for board They are
hauled back and forth to their sta-
tions in hacks and the government
foots all the bills
Not aH the men indicted lor timber
cutting have been apprehended but
they probably will be by September
when the next term of federal court
convenes ’ Occasionally an officer
gathers up a bunch of them and they
are arraigned and make bond - '
The numerical strength of the
guards was learned to some extent re-
cently whet) a party of hunters started
into thp reserve They were checked
by the sound of a horn Taking the
shells from their guns and blowing in
the barrels they answered In a short
time a score of guards swooped down
upon them to Inquire of their business
in the reserve

Words cannot express our apprecia-
tion of those friends who shared with
us the lonely vigils by the bedside of
our loved one No sweeter memory
