Conscious Existence After Death.
(communicated. )
There are people in this country
claiming to be gospel preachers,
who teach that when one dies he
ceases to exist, and remains in un-
consciousness till the resurrection.
They say the soul is material, like
the body and sleeps in the grave
with the body till the resurrection
morn. Such tjaching as this, in
my estimation, is false: I shall
discuss the proposition or state-
ment at the heading of this article
by turning on the light of the
scripture lamp. I shall undertake
to prove that the soul does not
cease consciousness when the body
dies, but lives on in a state of hap-
piness or woe, so to the bible we
will go. First, then I say man is
all material. In Geneses 1:27-7
we read "And God said let us
make man in our image, after our
likeness," So God created man
in His own image; in the image
of God created He him. Now I
can not conceive of its being pos-
sible even for the Almighty to
make a being in his own image
according to the above scripture
, and that being comeJrQJB
vine hand wholly and completely a
material being. It is*nnreason-
ble and dMscriptural. In the nexl
place I will take up the man
whose name was Moses. The Bi-
ble tells us that he lived in the
world, and did many wonderful
works of which a vast deal might
be said, but I will only mention
the death and burial recorded in
Deut. 34:5-6. "So Moses died
there in the land of Moab, and
He (the Lord) buried him in a
valley." Here we have the record
of his death and burial and accord-
ing to materialism or soul sleep-
erism, we will never see or hear of
Moses any more till the resurrec-
tion. Now I will leave him for
the present and take up another,
whose name the Bible says, was
Elijah—one of the prophets. With
the liistory of his life, all Bible
readers are familiar. Let me give
you the record of his departure
from earth. In 2nd Kings2-ll we
read ' And it came to pass as they
still went on and talked that be-
hold there appeared a chariot of
fire and horses of fire and parted
them both asunder and Elijah
went up by a whirlwind into
Heaven." Now I believe Elijah's
body underwent a great change,
perhaps all we undergo in death.
At least all that those who remain
on earth till the second ooming of
Christ. These soul sleepers teach
that there is no one in Heaven yet,

nor will there be until the resur-
rection, but the record says that
Elijah went up into Heaven.
Reader, whom shall we believe?
Will we ever see or hear of Moses
or Elijah any more before the res-
urrection? Not if soul sleeperism
is true. But let us examine and
see in the gospel by Matthew,
chapter 17, we read "And there ap-
peared uuto them Moses and Elias
talking with him. And Peter and
the other two saw them and knew
them as is evident from what
Peter said: "Let us make three
tabernacles one for Thee, one for
Moses and one for Elias." These
three men had never seen Moses I
nor Elijah, for Moses had been J
dead and (according to soul sleep-
erism) in the grave fourteen hun-
dred and eighty years (or nearly
so) and Elijah had been in Heav-
en more than nine hundred years,
and yet after centuries had rolled
away, they are both here in this
world alive and in conversation
with the Lord Jesus, if the scrip-
ture is to be believed and relied
upon. 1 believe these things are
true because God's word says so.
