Dividing 166 31i11ion
Dollars Is Real Chore
Did you ever try to divide 166
million dollars?
That is the big question that
has been holding up the loitisla-
ture for the past few wet-ks You
might say that it would be easy
but if you hit‘e never leen ono to
say which doportment of state
should receive an increase or de-
crease I can tell yO1 now it isnt
easy
More than 200 plus million dol-
lars has been requestiA And only
166 million is the antkipatod
budget The tud t lalaning
committee has teen at work over
the weekend and it is expetled
that some sort of agreement will
be reached by this wok k Then
the twenty-fourth Sk'SiOn of the
legislature will be history
New Car Dealer4
CommisSiOn VOted
The house passed and sent to
the governor a bill that will pro-
vide stringent controis over new
car dealers in Oltlilahomm The
bill authored 1) St:n Everett
Collins and the writer would pro-
hibit the dealer from forcing
purchasers to buy accessories or
extra equipment in order to get
a new car
Tne new law rs designed to
stop tne practice of automoblle
manufacturers from requiring
— dealers to tuy heavy inventories
of unnecessary parts and acces-
sories If new car dealers are not
required by the manufacturer to
buy extra equipment they will
not be forced to pass On to the
pullic this additional purchase
The new law is patterned after
an automobile commission now
in operation in about seven other
states
State Welfare Fund4
Are Reallocated
They passed into final form
and sent to the governor a bill
that reallocates the 2 percent
sales tax to the welfare fund I

sistance was increased from 75

to 713 percent: the allocatiovo for
dependent children was reduced
from 151 to 13 percent and the
a llocat ion for the blind was re-
duced from 21t to 2 percent
The bill leaves the administra-
tive cost shore at 3 percent but
creat es a floating emergency
fund of 11z percent which can be
used to supplement any of the
other funds At the present time
monies cannot be shifted from
one fund to another even if large
surpluses are built up in one
fund and needod In another The
bhnd fund has at present $370000
surplus as an example with oth-
ur funds in need of money This
floating fund is expected to aid
in situations such a s this

Dear Mayor Ross:
Increases in population short-
er working hours higher wages
paid vacations anti earlier age
of retirement in addition to tne
inborn urge for a change of vene
and recreation in the great out-
doors combine to make theoour-
ist business one of the top revenue-producing
enterprises in the
country A conservative estimate
of $10 billion has been set as its
value annually and its growing
Oklahoma as a whole and local
communities in particular need to
get themselves ready to grab of
a bigger chunk of this tremen
dous revenue 1A'e've got to find
out all the things we have of 'an-
usual interest and begin brag-
ging and shouting about them In
other words we've got to do a
better job of "selling" Oklahoma
You know it may sound odd to
you but it really doesn't take
much to draw tourists to a par-
ticular point of interest Many
communities waste their assets
because they don't realize they
have them They may not have a
big lake or mountain ranges but
there could be a very old histor-
ical home the biggest pecan tree
a pioneer mission or very old
furniture or farm implements
One California town simply sowed
winnia seeds in every yard to
make tourists pause and look
Kuhler Wisconsin pop 1716
became famous for its hollyhocks
You are a civic leader As such
we urge you to organize with
other local citizens to seek out
your nearby attractions and
make a real effort to promote
them The Oklahoma Planning
and Resources Board can help you
with promotions All of us are
eager to work with you
It'll mean dollars and cents for
your city Remember the aver-
age tour i' car contains 37 peo-
ple who spend $1946 a day
