WELCOME
At no time since the founding of
this city have we had the pleasure
of entertaining so noted a crowd of
visitors as at the presenttime. The
National Editorial Association has
representatives from all parts of the
United States,and these individuals
represent the voice of the people of
the particular point from which
they come.
While this to a certain degree is
a pleasure trip to view this 3-year
old wonder of the Southwest, at
the same time it gives these gen-
tlemen an opportunity of seeing us
as we are, to actually come in con-
tact with our people, and to get a
better idea of our facilities and ad-
vantages than any other plan could
afford.
Gentlemen,oneand all, we bid you
welcome to our city, we extend to
you the glad hand, and urge upon
you that the latch string of the city
of Lawton will always be found upon
the outside and a hearty welcome
within. __
WORKING UNDER DIFFICULTIES
Hardly a day passes that we do
not converse with some person who
is a citizen of this town and who has
had their faith in the Wichita Moun-
tain mineral shaken by the fact that
not a single property has yet been
placed on a paying basis.
Now the fact of the business is,
the cause for which we do not know,
that it has been the policy of this
government to try to hold in check
any and all mineral fields, until such
time as the nervy prospector has
developed sufficiently to show very
rich mineral. During the develop-
ment of the Cripple Greek district,
and after Stratton had shipped and
received pay for $30,000 worth of
ore, the government expert appear-
ed on the scene, made his exami-
nations and reported there was not
sufficient indication of mineral to
justify further prospecting and ex-
penditure of money.
In the Goldfield, Nev., district,
only 12 months ago a government
expert visited the district, examined
the formations and made his report
to the effect that there was prac-
tically nothing there.
So it would seem that the mat-
ter of the development and proving
of any new mineral field is left to
the sturdy prospector, and after the
reports made by those high up in
authority it becomes impossible to
interest capital. The man who has
plenty of nerve and sticktoitiveness
stays with his proposition, knowing
that he has something valuable,
doing what work he can and holding
his property within the rules laid
down by law, until such time as he
becomes able to unearth mineral
so rich its values cannot be ques-
tioned, when all parties join in try-
ing to get a finger in the pie, and
will if possible euchre the honest
prospector out of that which he has
toiled years to secure, and which
the general public have done all in
their power to prevent.
The prospector of the Wichitas
is now just coming to the point
where he is able to prove his asser-
tions to the satisfaction of those
who desire to in vestigate, has weath-
ered the expert reports from head-
quarters, and has endured the hard-
ships which men of less courage
would have grown faint at heart.
These are the conditions which
the miners of the Wichitas have
been compelled to meet, and with-
out capital they have shown their
determination, and are today show-
ing values which are prima facie
evidence of their future.
In scanning over our county ex-
changes and those adjacent to the
mountains, there is seldom cn item
appears relative to our mineral in-
terests. This is where the craft
make a mistake, and are standing
in their own light. If something
happens which is a detriment to our
country, it appears in scare-head
lines, while the mineral interests
of this country, which mean more
to her prosperity than all other in-
terests combined, is simply left un-
noticed. This industry will furnish
a market for the farmer and produ-
cer second to none, and brings mon-
ey into the country that no other
industry does. We wish to urge
upon the newspaper profession the
benefits to be derived from taking
up this subject and giving it the
publicity it justly deserves.
