Officer Dan Mercer said the Holt car struck the front of the engine, hurled 34 feet west into a bridge and was severed just ahead of the windshield. The motor was found in a ditch below the bridge . The engineer, Willie Gooden, Shawnee, said he was sounding both the horn and whistle as the train approached the crossing at 42 miles per hour. Mercer said three persons riding in a car just behind the station wagon said the red signal lights were not shining at the time of the crash."
