STRIP CROPPING SEEN
LTAS 'DUST PREVENTATIVE
4 !
Destruction of Oklahoma farm
lands by wind and water erosion can
bo materially lessened by the use of
strip cropping systems This is the
belief of Dr N E Winters regional
director of the Soil Erosion Service
In making spring plantings" Dr
r Winters says "farmers can do much
to conserve both soil and moisture on
cultivated : fields by planting row
crops In strips alternated with strips
of soilnholding crops such as Sudan
grass alfalfa sweet clover or closely
drilled feed crops"
Strip cropping has been used site--cessfully
for years in western Okla
hoina and parts of Texas to prerent
soil from blowing and recent experi:1-
melds show that - this method of
farming will check erosion caused by
water and at the same time conserve
much moisture— !
The efficiency of strip cropping in
pconservation of both soil and
Water is well illustrated by experi-
z ments conducted at the Cluthrie soil
1Cros1onexpertment station
At this station in May 1934 the
soil lost by erosion during a 252-inch
rain on a field planted to cotton alone
was over 100 times as great as on a
field strip cropped with cotton and
alfalfa while the water runoff was
