FRIDAY AUSULIT 19 1927
WILE WRITES FINIS ON
TRIP INTO THE WILDS
If Fricky and I Passed up some
good fishing opportunities in Colo-
rado we didn't fail in our duty be-
tween Dodge City Kan and Wichi-
ta Ordinarily western Kansas or
more correctly middle western Kan-
sas is not referred to :n travel bul-
letins as ideal fishing territory but
the genticnnen who compiled the
travel books have been in error
Middle Mit ern Kansas as F and I
know it cffrs one of the best fish-
ing grounds la the United States
We had in to drive along the old
Cannon 14111 trail it is carefully
marked) and cast our trout bass or
catfish lure3 diem we pleased
Water that essential ingredient t1
good fishing WaS all about us in un-
limited quantities
Mostly WC helped f:sn stranded
tourists out of the ditch Our prize
catch was a small coupe that evaded
us for several minutes Fricky spied
waving fender or two above the
waves at the side of the road near
Mullinville Kam Our trotit lines
being too delicate I borrowed the
swing rope front a nearby school
house and after several tempting
casts the coupe struck with all the
viciousness of a 20-pound pike: (if
there are such pike) entangling the
line behind a rear gill and the axle
Fricky reeled with all the might of
the little Chevy in low gear and it
seemed for a moment that we might
land our catch In'e had the coupe
clear el mud and water except for
the radiator and two front fenders
when our line parted Another prize
catch was lost! It was "this long
but it got away"
Wo drove to the next town and
a3ked a wrecker to go Lack and try
to lift that ear to the surface We
passed another car shortly a touring
car from Kingfisher driven by a
woman (its lone oc(upaiit) that had
turned everything but turtle in the
ditch beside the 'roadway This one
proved less a fighter than the little
coupe aforementioned and we set it
back on the road in half an hour of
labor
have I mentioned the western
Kansas irrigation projects? I had
never heard of them before this trip
In fact I was under the impression
that Kansas "raised the best wheat
in the world" without the aid of ir-
rigation bat that impression was er-
roneous We found irrigation on all
sides in our drive out of Dodge City
eastward The floMI gates had been
left wide open and every ditch was
filled Even the roads had been
freshly irrigated as late as the night
before! Irrigation j a great pro-
ject I add as an after-thought
As I write this I think of T G
Burns well-known member of the
Stillwater Lions club back in Stillwa-
te T G once told men that he
thought me fully qualified to become
a "Lion" That is a poor pun and
perhaps I shouldn't mention it it
occurred to me just now as I re--read
the foregoing paragraphs Joking
aside however it is no stretching of
the point at hand to intimate that
found wet roads in western Kansas
At times we would have only stakes
at the side of the road to indicate
where the road lay perhaps 100-
yard stretches being under water at
a depth that allowed the water to
splash over the floor boards of the
can We found the highway passa-
ble however although our speed scl-
dom approached twenty miles per
hour and quite often was nearer Lye
All of which is a novelty in the
country referred to More often
tourists find a hard and fast high-
way leading across Kansas to the
mountain regions Incidentally we
found roads more rough this summer
in Colorado than is usual As a rule
the paths of tourist travel re 'quite
smooth—as far as roadwvs go
When I do the cooking F remarks
the "path of the tourist" is bound to
be a rocky road
Mullinville left behind P and I
proceeded to Greensburg on to Cul-
lison and thence to Pratt If Pratt
Kan was the home of the Kansas
State Agricultural college it would
look for all the world like Stillwater
We drove into the place and I felt
quite at home The rain had changed
to a light mist and the sky appeared
to Le thinking some of clearing
This was welcome to an American
Legion convention after the five days
and nights of almost continual rain
and not a glimpse of sun
AO ' As it was! yet too -wet to attempt
It the cooking I suggested that we stop for
! boy- r! -' a sandwich and cup of coffee—we
Lid be t! hadn't eaten for a couple of hours
xtend - Inside a neat little cafe we found
other '' 0 quite a crowd and F sat (town at one
