Osage Hills State Park—a rugged cross-section out of the once sprawling Osage Indian reserva-
tion—is a popular vacation and recreation area for those who like relaxation filled wit h a "western
accent" and colorful early day history
The park a scenic wooded sector surrounded by rolling grassland teeming with fat cattle is lo-
cated midway between Pawhuska and Bartlesville The site is in Osage county Oklahoma's larg-
est and twice the size of the state of Rhode Island
Osage Hills park covers 850 acres more than half given to the state by the citizens of Bartlesville
and Pawhuska Through the park courses Sand Creek a stream harboring bass crappie perch sun-
fish and channel cat
Sand Creek twists and turns down forested canyons and past high cliffs From the top sight-
seers gain a panoramic view of large portions of the park
Since the state took over the park a small lake has been built on one of the tributaries of Sand
Creek and this body of water—named Lake Lookout in memory of the late Fred Lookout Chief of
the Osages—supplements Sand Creek In providing fishing for park visitors
Other facilities making the area attractive to vacationers include a swimming pool camping
and picnic ateas modern cabins and a youth camp that will accommodate groups as large as 125
persons Rental boats also are available
As a general picnicking fishing and boating attraction the pat k serves a large area in northeast
Oklahoma as well as many visitors from out-of-state It Is especially popular with Boy Scouts and
other nature study groups
It is said the first "out-of-state visitor" in the Osage Hills park region was DeSoto in 1542 but
long before his time and for many years thereafter the area was a hunting ground for the warlike
Osages and other western tribes
It was eventually made an Indian reservation Subsequently oil was discovered in the Osage
country and the Osages for a time were among the richest people in the world
In territorial days the Osage Hills were a favorite "hideout" for outlaws and the Sand Creek
bottoms provided camping places for horse thieves traveling what was known as "thieves path" en
route to Kansas with animals stolen in Texas
Today the area is best known for its large cattle ranches and lush bluestem pastures Other
area attractions include Oklahoma's first oil well Hulah Lake the Indian Museum at Pawhuska
and nationally famous Woolaroc ranch and lodge southwest of Bartlesville

History Of Marine
Uniforms Told
Mr Average Citizen is fairly
well-in'iormed about the Marine
Corps being America's force-inreadiness
hut according to Mar-
ine Sergeant Max Taylor local
Marine recruiter much mystery
surrounds the f a med "Dress
Blue" uniform
"Although attracting attention
wherever seen the Marine dress
uniform doesn't conform to con-
ventional modern styles because
it is so steeped in traditior " said
St Taylor
The Sergeant pointed out that
the red trouser-stripe worn only
by officers and non-corns corn:
tnemorates the blood of com-
missioned and noncommissioned
officers who lost their lives in the
battle of Chapultepec in the Mexi-
can War of Mt&
He also said the high collar
which looks uncomfortable but
actually 'sift Is a holdover from
sword !fighting days
"When Marines were fighting
hand-to-hand on the decks of sail-
ing vessels" related the Ser-
geant "the high collar was of
hard heavy leather padded for
comfort and served to ward off
fatal sword thrusts at the jugular
vein It was from the leather col-
lar that Marines earned the title
of 'Leatherneck'"
"And believe me" concluded
Taylor '"we are proud of the
Marine Dress Blues and wouldn't
change them for the world"
