Woldward's Inovfd
in quickly to give critically needed
aid and durirz a period of acute
emergency The ltHilits of the
dead were removed the injured
vo-e cared for and the homeless
were sheltered anti fed
All of this was emergency work
and it NaS Well done by federal
and state agencies the Red Cross
the 'Salvation Army local relief
organizations and private citizens
Now the emergency period is'
over and a much longer period
of rehabilitation has begun lAlhat
does this mean to Woodward with
more than 14')0 blocks of homes
schools churches and business
buildings destroyed or damaged
beyond use?
What would it mean to your
town—or my town? After losing
two months of school this spring
would our children lose another
term or another year because
school huildings were not rebuilt?
The answer is "Probably yes—
unless our neighbors gave us a
helping- hand" And that is the
otark answer that Woodward faces
Constitutional and other legal
barriers prevent governmental ag-
enclea from stepping into the
breach The Red Cross is pre-
parNi to do a big job of rehabili-
tation but it will be restricted to
private and family rehabilitation
It will not reach schools or other
public buildings
The citizens of Woodward have
shown commendable courage in
facing up to a staggering disaster
They have done and will do every-
thin g within their power to carry
the burden that has been thrust
upon them But the citizens of
Woodward with all their courage
arst with all tliftir determination
cannot do all that must be done
Accordingly Woodward's good
neighbors have been asked to help'
in the trehabilitation—just as they
helped in the emergency Wood-
ward is' in grave need-of $5()0090
tO ambit in reconstruction that
will assure school terms next fall
Woodward's appeal is a matter
'of importance to your town and
my town For your town or my
town Might be making an appeal
tomorrow—or next week Civic
cittas'' churches and chambers of
commerce in our towns can be
and should ibe the instruments
through which we do our part in
raising needed funds
But the important thing is for
each of us to lend a band just as
we would want our neighbors to
lend a hand if we were the ones
in need Checks should be -made
payable to and should be forward-!
ed to the "Woodward Relief Committee"
